TL won't start

so this past friday night my tl was stalling at a light
and a few minutes later it started to make a pinging
sound from the engine. i pulled over and shut
the engine and it just died and didn't start again.
so i called TLC and the tow truck came 2hrs later.
i just got my car back from the dealer today and
they couldn't find anything wrong with it besides
the fact that it had bad gas?? so i was wondering if
anyone's had the same problem. the cars working
fine now but they told me that they drained the tank
and filled it up and it was working fine. is this normal?
i've only had the car for 5 months

the same thing happened to me like 3 times... the first time it happened, I had filled up gas and had been driving all day then it just started hesitating and it finally stalled and would not start. after letting the car sit for a while, it finally startedand it was idling really low and the check engine light came on along with the TCS light the next day i took it to the dealer and they told me it was bad gas and that the dirty gas caused the engine to misfire which is why it stalled... it happened a couple of times after but i just reset the light

Hey guys,

Are urs all 2000 models? Mine had the same problem and the dealer explained that in some area, like Toronto for me, is too cold in the winter and the gas company would put some chemical stuff in the gas to keep the gas have better quality during winter. However, our 2000 TL computer won't recoginize that chemical stuff and will think something is wrong with the fuel and won't let u start the engine...
Dealer didn't know this problem in the very beginning, they even gave me a brand new car. But the problem is still there, if u heard the fan running after u turn off the engine, that means the dealer bypass the circuits for u, and this disable the computer to check the fuel stuff... but the dealer said it's not a solution... it's just a modification...
If you guys live in some freezing area, then this might be the problems... and the only way to resolve this is replace the computer with the 2001 or newer computers. However, I waited for almost a year to get mine... and u really have to keep reminding them pushing Honda so that they will send the computer faster...
Just some experience.....

I somewhat remember the dealer said this kind of chemical is not allowed in the US but I am not sure....
but if it happens very often.. (as for me.. imagine u can't start ur brand new car in the temp of -10 C.... 5 times in two hours... ) and it's happening regularly, show the dealer... and told them u know what is happening and u want the new computer... it should still be under warrenty... and if they said it's been solved.. see if the fan is running after u turn off the engine... if it's on for like 20 mins.. they did the trick.. but the problem is still there... good luck... pm me if u need more help!

This is also happening on 2002's

Chien,

This exact thing happened to me last week.. I go out to start the car and it cranks but refused to start. I got it towed to Erin Mills and when the tow truck driver came and we tried again (this was 40 min later), still no start. It would turn but no go.

Anyways Erin Mills just said that the engine was flooded and they replace my spark plugs. I have 13000kms on the car and I only have it for 4.5 months ! and its very scary when a brand new car wont start!!!

So I guess this problem has to do with low temps and changes in the gas. I have always been filling up with Petro Canada 91. However, now I have noticed a little hesitation at around 95-120 kms when in 4th or 5th gear ... (more in 5th). this was not there in the summer months.

I remember reading here, someone said that if you are below 110 and in 5th the rpm is way to low for the car and it does hesistate when going uphill/downhill .. maybe due to the grade logic also I guess it getting confused.

I guess the bottom line is I'll have to see how she behaves in spring when it warms up and the weather changes.

Is ur TL-S? The dealer said the computer after 2001 model won't have this kind of problem... and so far, after replacting the computer, I haven't had this kind of problem.... so maybe Erin Mills is correct this time... I am only guessing... but double check if ur fan is running after u turn off the engine...
where did u buy ur car?

I have 01 TL and it happened to me last week on my way to Park Ave. I asked Jens about it and he said that it's something htat the oil companies put in the gas that is supposed to keep the gasoline clean. Jens, correct me if I am wrong.

Chien,

YES as my sig says .. I have a 2002 SSM TLS which I bought from Erin Mills Acura in June.

No my fan is not on after I shut the car off.

Don't know whats going on but I'm going to switch to Sunoco Ulta 94 and see if the hesistation goes away. Funny thing though it did not happen today on the way home from work and it is 0C and since the weather was bad I was doing 60kms in 4th and 5th.
Maybe that additive in the gas works for cold temps ONLY and since we were having warm temps it was not working too well and hindering performance. Don't know but I'll keep everyone updated

What going on with my car!

OK...
Today coming home from work... Car is very rough. Check Engine and VSA light comes on... can't drive it as it is way too rough and could be risking damage. Car is now at dealer and I have to call up tomorrow to check whats the problem.

OH! yeah! I just filled up the tank this morning (Sunoco 94) on the way to work and it was fine ... smooth all the way.

I now have 14250kms and this is the second time within 2 weeks that this is going back.

I am starting to seriously doubt this "HONDA RELIABILITY" !!! this is really scaring me !!

prlcivic, I'll mention the bulletin to the Service Manager tomorrow morning when I call and Thanks.
