TL Problems
Hi, I am new here and I am waiting for 02 TL to be delivered. Reading about transmission problems that some people have does not make me happy. So, I would like to ask you, is it just with four speed transmission (99 model year) or even five speed one can be a problem as well? Is there any difference between 01 and 02 model in regards to the transmission in a regular TL (not TLS)?
Also, other than the warped rotors and some noise problems (those should not be a big deal, I guess), are there any other common problems with 02-production model?
Site looks great, but I think that “problems” should be back to their own, separate forum.
I am from Toronto, so, looking forward to hear from Toronto area owners about their experiences with a car and even more importantly with dealers. I have made my deal with “Acura Sherway”, they looked the best, at least for now.

I have 00 TL..and the only trans problem I have is when I shift R from D , there is a clicking sound from underneath the car......That's the only problem I have and I think the all HONDA car have this kind of problems.....
Welcome aborad...anyway....

okay buddy... here is what I have to say...
The TL is a great car, honestly. But don't think it's a great value, cuz they do cut corners...
Now, my 2000 TL got the tranny problem.. So, yes that can happen to the 5spd, but I am not sure about your 2002 TL.
I heard good things about Sherway Acura, and I know the owner's son drivers a black 2000 TL as well, with 19' C5, Brembo brake kit at the front... really nice...
Don't go to Downtown Acura or Acura North Toronto.... THEY SUCK!!!!!!
I havn't really dealt with Sherway Acura, but they also got some attitude over the phone... but the owner's son is cool thought...

I think the clicking sound is very normal, but i don't notice it in the car though, i am pretty sure it can be heard outside the car. This is not a problem, i have heard this kinda sound from other car brands especially cars with stick.
I have a 00 TL, and til now i start to notice a little jerk from 2nd to 3rd gear. It wasn't like that before... although the jerk is very little, but i know my car the best, it wasn't like this before.. Yeah Honda better get this fixed, cuz i heard HOnda has been have transmission problem for a long long time but never fixed the problem. My friend's 97 3.0 CL has this jerking transmission since the first day he got the car.
TL would be a perfect car if there is no transmission problem... other fit and finish problems are very minor problems.

Just want to add something.
I live in Toronto as well, my experience is NEVER EVER GO TO ACURA OF NORTH TORONTO FOR ANYTHING!!!!
Personally i think downtown acura isn't so bad... they are nice (except service manager Steve).. they do get their job done. One downside is that they hardly give out loaners.... again if you want a loaner don't talk to STEVE, talk to Alen, Alen is much a nicer guy to deal with.
I don't know about any other dealers. Hope it helps.

I have an MDX and a TL-S. Haven't had a single problem with either one. No rattles, squeaks, or QC problems.

When you pick up your TL check for atleast these three things...
Is the exhaust tips even or is one lower than the other?
Have the recalls been taken care of? There are two recalls for '02 TL(S). One is the auto up switch can malfunction (catch on fire?!) and the other is the seatbelt buckle may not let you out of the car if you are in an accident (nice one).

Unlevel exhaust pipes
Funny thing. 01 TL was fine.
But, picked up a dent in the right rear tail pipe. Had that fixed in month one. In month three, I looked at my tail pipes and realized that the one that was fixed was about an inch lower than the other one.
I'm going in tomorrow to get it fixed. But is this a common problem?

I just bought and recieved my 2002 TL about two weeks ago. So far this car is awesome (1200 kilometers). I also have a 1998 Accord EXV6 and although there may be similarities the TL is way nicer.
I purchased mine from Acura 2000 in Brampton and was quite pleased with the entire purchase process and if you can believe it, the car was delivered before they promised. I have bought at Sherway Acura in the past and they were also good.
Regarding transmissions, my Accord is presently having problems with same @ 160,000 kilometers which is bull****. I am raising hell with Honda Canada to get them to pay for it as there is no way it should fail at this point, especially when I just traded my 1992 Accord EXV6 with 310,000 kilometers, and still going strong.
I will let you know the outcome.

I have the same thing as 2k1tl has. When I take it out of Reverse, put it into Drive, it hesitates sometimes for several seconds before engaging. Otherwise, everthing is great. This also is an old subject posted, possible to look up some searches on the subject
If you haven't read my thread in the Type S forum titled "Type S...Should be Type P.O.S.", read it. I'm definitely having tranny problems on my 2002 TL-S. I don't know yet if it's the tranny itself, the speed sensor, or something else. Whatever it is, my baby is dead in the water. Also, 2 others have reported similar problems to what mine was doing early on before it progressed into something worse. So maybe it is a common problem.
Reading a little bit more about different problems TL and TLS have, MAN, this whole thing looks like a horror from GM, FORD …
So, transmission, warped rotors, lots of different rattles and squeaks, poor paint quality, scratches that are easy to make inside and out and god knows what else.
Now, I am thinking going back to the dealer and taking back my deposit many. I am seriously rethinking Nissan Maxima; it is ugly, but better ugly then unreliable and squeaky. Sad, because I like this car so much.

if I may...
1. the clicking sound when going from D to R is normal. it happened in my 92 accord, it happens in my TL and it happens in my friends TL. I think its a Honda thing.
2. that little jerk/hesitation when you first engage it into D is 100% normal. its the torque converter engaging. if you read the manual under "Shifting Transmission" it tells you that you may feel a slight jerk when engaging into D.
I really dont know how all of you are having problems with the car. 15k and I'm running 100% trouble free *knocking on fake interior wood trim*
