TL 99 Transmission Failure Symptom?
Alright. I was on the road today at red line and when it changed to green, I found that my TL hiccups shifting from 1 to 2. Its weird since it is the first time have it. I changed to manually mode to test between 1 and 2. I found that its hard to shift, but its normal for 3 and 4. So is it the sign for new tranny? My TL has 165k now, I dont know if it went through the recall or not. Bought it at 138k. I am about to change the transmission fluid tomorrow to see if it gets better or not. Is it necessary to go with ATF-DW1 (they stop making Z1) and where to get it? Can I go with other brand?

Rebuild is the best choice for the 99 or you can find one at a salvage yard for less than the rebuild, however theres a chance that it can also be on its way.
You can try a drain and fill but chances are slim (the damage is done)
There was no recall for the 99, only 2000-04 which an oil jet was installed do to the 2nd gear overheat.
Use Honda DW-1 only

Is the CEL on ? Are the "hiccups" occurring only during the 1>2 shift ?
Could possibly be that the EGR passageways, TB intake and IAC valve need cleaned. Try the drain & fill of the tranny fluid and consider cleaning the shift solenoid screens. Check for any vacuum leaks and also inspect all wiring connections and grounds.

The Honda DW-1 is sold at your local Honda dealership. If you do a full drain and fill 3x3 you will need to buy 10 quarts because every time you drain a little more than 3 quarts come out at a time. And make sure when done that the fluid level is dead nuts on the dipstick.
But, if you think or know for sure that the tranny is dying or toast put the money you spend for the fluid towards a repair or replace.

With the 99 TL your choice is limited to replacing the transmission with another 4 speed or rebuild the one you have. To change over to a 5 or 6 speed tranny would require a lot of extra work.
