Tinting my windows- what to ask for?

I'm looking to tint my windows this weekend here in NY. I know I want 35% all around, but how do I know if the tint place is giving me the good stuff or some sh!t that they couldn't sell to anyone who knows better? I have no idea when it comes to tinting about the different stickers, the quality, etc-

What kind of questions will they ask me? Are there 'upgrades' that are merely cash grabs? Is there anything specific I can ask them for?

If any of you guys on the board live in the tri-state area run a shop or know someone who does, lemme know, I'll give you the business.

Thanks

one option in westchester

I got my '99 TL done 35% smoke at Acura of Westchester in Larchmont. They charged $250. Found out that they sub-contract to Audio Illusions in New Rochelle. Audio Illusions charged me $175 direct for my '02.

If you're interested...

Haven't had any problems with the tint job since they did it four years ago. Just got the new one done last week, but here is pic of the job they did on my old ride...

Thanks for the info. Do you have pics of the job done last week?
The 'smoke tints'- how do they differ (if at all) from ordinary tints? And did you find that the tints from 4 years ago faded at all? That 35% looks pretty light.

Laurelcrest, whichever place you decide to go have your windows tinted, I would suggest you tell them not to cut out around the 3rd brake light. It looks but a55 nasty when this area is cutout.

I had mine done for $100. Simply because my friend works at a Car audio joint out in Farmingdale LI. I think it usually runs about $100 and a half, give or take a $20.

I wonder why towns out in LI sound so pathetic, Hicksville, Farmingdale, Babylon, etc I guess it's better than having a name like Dildo, Newfoundland or Intercourse, PA.

The brake light on the back windshield? Can you still see the light well through the glass? It's a safety question, I guess

if your curious about the type of tint they use, just ask them and post here because some ppl here are familiar with the quality brands of tint. also, make sure you get a lifetime warranty, it's security in case anything ever happens with the tint.

Yes the brake light. And it still shines through just fine, I only have 35% tint.

Thanks for the hint. I called up Audio Illusions in New Rochelle, they're asking $185, so I'll probably go there. I was talking with Alexxx a little while back, he went to a place in Brooklyn that asked about $250, so this sounds like a good deal. Plus it means I don't have to go to Brooklyn

Glad it worked out.

I haven't gotten a digital camera yet, so I am waiting for my pics to get developed. Then I'll post some pics. Its the same tint percentage that I had in the old pic, though. There was still no fading when I traded her in.

It is light, but it's legal. I didn't want to give the cops another reason to pull me over...

another way to look at it

In the middle of the day, it is a very light tint. At night, it looks a lot darker especially with the dark interior. I like the effect.

Besides, you want the honey in the lane next to you to be able to see you a little bit, don't you?

What he said.

I got my tints done for $220, they took it to another place. They said that they have their own person but I told them that I would wait (I waited ~3 hours) in there. No complaints about the tints.

I didn't want 20% or darker because I don't think it looks good on a Silver TL-S

Laurelcrest, I should be in Brooklyn on Friday during the daytime. If you want to see what it looks like in person and you are around let me know and I'll drop by. I don't have a digi-camera but I took a few pics and waiting for development.

Thanks, I'd like to take you up on that... and by then you'll see mine! I think I'm going to get it done tomorrow If not Friday, then Sunday?

Hi,
I think most of you PAID a little too much for the tint. I got mine for $100. Ususall the rate is about $150. I have limo tint all around and its gorgeous. I like the privacy. Unless you want platinum tint, the tint they use are jsut films so there is no oggd or bad quality is jsut how good they put it on, Let it sit in the sun for 48 hrs and you are set. The more its gets expose in the sun hte lighter it iwll get to a certain extend. Well good lusk, PLEASE PLEASE dont pay more than $160 for your tint.

Be sure to ask him to use one piece for the back glass. Some tint places might get lazy and do a two piece. If their labor is crappy, you'll see a nasty horizontal line right across the middle. Here's how my tint job looks. I have limo-black rears and dark smoke fronts.

Although you may be right I do believe there is quality difference in the tint they use. The shop I got my tint a year ago offered different brands, the good the bad, and what they recommend (since that's what they use in their personal cars). I was offerered a cheap quote (sub 200) provided I used the crappiest non-metallic tint (3 year warranty), but the one I ended up with was their best tint for $230 with a lifetime warranty on bubbling and fading. $300 if you wanted the windshield tinted also since that would of been done underneath the table.
