Tint Removal. For those of you who did it before. How much?
if they have to take off all 4 windows and the back - $125-$200. You can take off your 4 side windows yourself to save money. Just get a few razor blades to scrape off the tint. then some simple green and medium grit steel wool to disolve/rub off the glue. then you will only have to pay for the shop to take off your back window - the worst because of the defrost/radio lines and it is always the hardest because it takes the most direct sun. It took me about 4 hours over the weekend to get the 4 side windows off and all the glue off (the glue is a real pain to get off completely), but it saved me nearly $100.
Hmm I know that the place I got mine tinted will take it off for free. But if your car came tinted, I guess you'll have to spend some $$$ to get it safely removed. I heard if you do it yourself there is a spary you can mix or buy that'll aid in the removal.
it wasnt that hard, just took some time. the guy who did my tint said he uses a steam wand to help. he also printed me out the directions to take off the tint myself. you will be hard pressed to find somewhere to take it off for free - I have never heard of such a place. It is a real pain and that is why they charge. Expect to pay for at least 3 hours of work if they charge by the hour for all 4 windows and the back one.

Tint removal is only free if you have lifetime warranty from that shop you bought it from. Usually the life time warranty covers scratching, fading, peeling, etc. and removal. Well at least mine does.

the side windows with a razerblade, 00 steel wool, and a light scotchbrite pad and some alcohol you will be fine. don't use razor blades on the back window, instead on a hot sunny day like 70+, get a big ass black garbage bag and spray the back window with water and apply the bag like its another layer of tint. let it sit in the sun for 30 to an hour and the tint should peel right off with out any residue.
Yeah... This sux to have to remove the tint. If it wasn't for the dickhead cop who pulled me over just for that. I guess a car with no tint looks ok too... I just hate be steamed when Summer time comes around...

Good luck!
Good luck!
Now it looks real good though. I did the side windows myself and paid $60 for him to take off the back tint. I got 18% on the back and 30% on the sides with the Luminar metalic tint
Maybe it depends on the type of tint, but I took a razor blade and started from the edge. Once I got enough to get a grip, I started pulling on the film gently with my hand, and it all came off in one piece.
Now the glue, on the other hand, is a totally different story.

amonia gets it off pretty good. it stinks alot and you have to keep all the doors and windows open but... it works. if you can peel off the tint and use amonia to get off the glue it comes off with a cloth. but like i said it will almost knock you out.
Inpire, I also got a ticket for my tints. It is really optional to remove tint, you can just pay like a $50 fine or so and not remove it. The other options is to remove and and pay $10.
Essentially, they both pretty much equal out to the same amount of money.

What area are you in? Irvine is where I got my ticket. Will the fine vary depending on the area you are in? Thanks!

dont you just have to provide a photo with the tint off and than no more ticket? if so just take a picture of the before you get the tints...keep showing the judge that pic or others??? I think one of my boys does this in FL.
I live in Corona, doubt the fine will vary. Did they say you have to remove it? My ticket told me to pay $50- 60 and that was that, no tint removal at all. I then called the court and they told me I can also just remove it and pay the $10 fine.
I would suggest you calling the court and asking them if you can just pay the $50-60 fine and not provide proof that you corrected it. Maybe if you make an excuse like you don't have the time to have it written off, you will get the other option.
Mine was tacked on to my speeeding ticket. I eneded up paying $10 and removed it becasue I wanted to get my fronts redone.
But yeah, if you want to remove the tint, it is really easy (especially the front). It is just time consuming and a PIA becasue of the residue left behind. No need for a razor, that is really risking the defroster line, but your only removing the front right? Check out tintdude.com if you haven't already, great info on tints.

But is SoCal different than NorCal? Cause I thought tint tickets, no matter where in California, are considered "Fix-It" tickets, meaning you can only fix it and then the ticket goes away. Usually on the ticket they mark the "correctable" box and you HAVE to remove it and have it inspected by an officer to sign off the ticket. That's what happened to me, and I never heard of any Tint fines in California before, just removal.
