Timing Belt

While I was at the ACURA dealer, I was quoted like 600 bux for the service... Has anyone else gotten this service done cheaper? Am I wasting my money? Can it be done easily at home? Thanks in advance!

I suppopse the last question is subjective. If ou are a good mechanic, then there is no issue with replacing the t-belt. However, if you are like me, I would not trust my own abilities to replace the belt and get it right. For me, it was painful but I rather pay up front to be somewhat sure that the work was done right other then trust my own ability and screw up the car when the belt fails.
600 seems a bit high but not by much when you are talking dealer work.

the tensioner is a recall, not the belt. i also was quoted 800, but that was with a waterpump also. if your gonna replace the belt i would do the waterpump at the same time. you have to remove the belt to do it and if your at the milage to do the belt you are at the milaeage to do the waterpump

Why do you need to change the water pump? Are you saying that the water pump will break down shortly after you change the timing belt?

It is more preventative. Most of the cost of replacing the t-belt goes to labor charges. The belt alone is like 35.00. The recommendation to do the h20 pump is that it 'may' go out without any advanced warning. Then you are stuck with having to pay the labor charges 2x (once for the TB the other for the pump). It is best to get them both taken care of together then you wont have to worry about it at all.

When my pump was replaced with the belt, I asked to see the pump. It did not look worn at all but remember that it is only a rubber gasket seal that could fail at any time. That is what you dont want to happen.

Hope this helps with your decision.

exactly. like i said you have to remove the belt to change the pump. so if your taking the belt off to replace it youmight as well replace the pump at the same time (preventative). that and honda recomends it that way too.

Ah, I understand now. So how much does a water pump at the dealer go for? Any ideas? Oh, and at what mileage is the the timing belt changed?
