do you have a new gasket to go on? if not stop now. if you do then yes it will require a little persuation to get it off. the wooden handle end of a hammer to tap with or a putty knife between the 2 surfaces. its just the gasket holding it on
if your carefull you can/should be able to get it off with out damaging it., or you can just remove teh whole IM with it on and clean and wash the whole thing out. the im has metal gaskets and can be reused

I think you even persuaded me to do fsttyms1. I have been wanting to do this for a while just because I am a clean freak(not just with my car) and I can't imagine how dirty it is in there. Let me know how it goes Eric.

i just did this today. KRIS IS THE MAN!!! he helped me out alot!!!!!!!!! its a really easy thing to do. mine wasnt really dirty to begin with so tmw i will find out what the hell is really tripping my check engine lights
the bottom gasket is not metal it seems that way but the top layer is realy paper, i did not know either until my friend pointed that out to me...
you need to go to the your local parts store and get some "gasket maker" it's a tube of silicon basically, apply it to circle parts of IM (dont know what it's called im a noob haha) on the engine block you'll see what im talking about it's slightly discoloured metal due to the pattern apply to the rings around the block then on the bottom of the IM then put the gasket back on

i think i may have damaged mine. car idles very rough and the rpms jump at idle. now there is also this very high pitched whistling sound. i took the car to the shop for my headers and asked them to look at the engine as well. the guy ran the computer and said that the whistling is because i got a improper seal and its causing a vacume. he also said the gasket may be getting sucked in to the manifold.
know where i can get new gaskets from??
dammit. i need this thing tmw. i drive back to MD at 3. ill have to wake up early and call everybody. which do you think i damaged? the lower one? the top metal one? the side metal one?

most likely the lower one. thats the most easily damaged. i guess start out by pulling the top piece off and double check that gasket. if thats fine then frocede to the lower. (also double check that you have all the bolts tightned sufficantly, but not too much that you strip the bolts) if they are all tight then take them off and inspect the lower for damage if its whats causing a whistle or rough idle you should see damaged gasket.

how would i know if the thing is damaged? i pulled it all apart already tonight. by the time i realized i may need new gaskets the stores are closed. i really hope i can get it tmw. if not, do you think its ok to drive to MD from NY tmw? or is that a NO NO

teh whole IM cleaning takes about a hour
