think dealers trying to screw me about my unichip. Help!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

not sure if you guys saw my earlier statement in the unichip discussion thread, but a couple of weeks ago my tranny went tits up. I did not have time to remove my unichip before taking it in to the dealer, if i wanted to get a loaner car. anyways after them haveing it for almost two weeks, they called me today saying the new tranny was in but they were haveing lights coming up on the dash. They reinstalled my unichip in the new ecu. They could not figure out why the light were on. so they put my new ecu in another tl & said it was fried & i would be responsible for buying the new ecu due to my unichip. like $645.00 + $89.00 diagnostic fee. i was dumbfounded & really did not know what to say. I just told them there were many other members with the unichip & no one else has burned one up. i was pissed. they have me by the balls as i must have my car. I did not have any problems with my old ecu or unichip. i told them just put in a new ecu & leave out the unichip. a half hour later I get another call from them saying they blew another ecu, this time without the unichip. This was like music to my ears as it meant my unichip did not cause the ecu to blow. they asked me what mods i had done to the car & asked me if i had done any other thing electrical to my car besides the unichp. They now have to call acura engineering to try to figure out what might be causing this problem as no one there had ever seen anything like this. They were also getting me ready for a fall too, saying if my chip was the cause of this my bill would be at least $1,000.00. WTF do i do if they try to stick me. I do not know enough to defend myself. Any ideas. sorry so long, but its kind of complicated.

ya i know, but i think there trying to tell me the unichip might have screwed something else up, causing these ecu's to blow. Personaly, i think thier full of shit. i'm going to fight them tooth & nail if they try to charge me. I never had one problem with my ecu or unichip until my up until the time the tranny blew.

Its their fault for reinstalling the UniChip in the new ECU. Its aginst Acura's policy to carry over aftermarket equipment. The tech that did it was not supposed to. So They should have left it out, thus its their own damn fault...

i like the sound of that, but will it hold up. Also, what could be causing these things to fry. They fried one even with out the chip installed?

When the bill comes, submitt it to your lawyer. In the worst of cases, his bill (lawyer's) will be lower.

I think you should look up what the Magellan Law is in your state. The dealer has to prove beyond a resonable doubt that it was Un-chip that caused the failure(s).

there is nothing that the unichip would have done to something in the car that it would make the 2nd computer with out it blow.

I suggest you get in contact with Unichip manufacturer and ask for some advice. They might be able to provide some insights on what the mechanic did wrong (if any).

you seem quite calm about a different angle to the problem, which i hate to bring up now. since they fried two ECUs, you realize there is a high probability your unichip is also toast, don't you? i would be careful before putting it in. you may want to send it back and have it checked.

Just go to Unichip and have them deal with the dealership. If the Unichip won't damage any ECU, the company would be dying to defend against their products. They sure not want anyone to tarnish their names. However, if they don't back against their products, then there is a fatter chance that their Unichip WILL damage an ECU.

good example of risks associated with modding the car. If nothing can be done, I guess you'd have to take it in the ass like a man....

This should never be an option IMHO, because if we believe SD's comments, the ECU fried even without the Unichip installed. This means there is something seriously wrong with SD's car, regardless of Unichip installation or not. The dealer has to prove that the Unichip in fact caused the recurring ECU-to-fry problem. And from what I understand on how the Unichip works, it is unlikely the Unichip caused this problem. If anyone knows better, please chime in and correct me. And I bet the dealer will try to strong arm S.D. into paying for the repairs because of the Unichip mod. This is definitely a sad day for all potential Unichip buyers.

update, you guys arn't going to believe this shit. Acura called me 1st thing this a.m. & said, " Mr. Ruckman we have some good news, some very good news." Came to find none of the ecu's fried. What happened is after talking to engineering it was discovered they had not sent one but 3 ecu's for an acura 2003tl, I have a 2003TLS. even though they look identical, there is quite a difference between the two. My total charge for a tranny replacement, new ecu, turned rotors, new pads was $43.00, & that was for my oil change. Do you believe that shit, that really makes them look good. Here yesterday they were going to soak me for a grand because my unichip had caused all this grief. I asked them if they reinstalled my unichip & they told me they would rather not. Took my baby home installed my chip & she's running great. Better than before. I could really tell the differance from my ride home without the unichip & my later installation of it. Difference is like day & night. No cel, no lights, running like a champ. I'm one happy mofo right now. i was concerned the new e.c.u. might fuck with my chip, but no such luck.

...but make sure it doesn't sound like you're blaming them. You want Uni-chip to be on your side.

EDIT: I'm late Hey. How much is a Type S uni-chip? Is it a big difference? I'm considering one.
Thanks,
B

How did you get them to replace your pads and resurface your rotors? How many miles are on your car?

its not a huge difference, but very noticable. another plus is my gas mileage is greatly improved. i paid about 700 bones through a cl group buy, including the PnP harness.

my car has 28k on her. when i took my car in for the new tranny, they took care of my rotors too. When my wifes 2000tl had the same problem with 39,000k they did it for free too.

it wasn't messed up, its thier standard practice to replace the ecu when they replace the tranny. i have a feeling its a less aggresive ecu to give thier shitty transmissions more of a chance. Although i don't notice any difference, my car still is as quick as hell.
