Unhappy TCS and Check Engine Light

Well guys, it has finally happened. 65,517 miles on my '99 and the TCS and Check Engine lights came on today. I have been noticing a slight slip from 2nd to 3rd lately as well... (maybe it was 3rd to 4th, I don't quite remember...) I filled up with gas and now only the Check Engine light is on.... in any case, wish me luck!

Well, the good news is that you can bring it back and get a new tranny.

No, I believe the 7/100,000 only applies to 00+. I'm covered under Acura Care (had to pay extra for it). I suggest picking up Acura Care because of the number of instances of tranny failure (even 99).

yeah, I have a 99, and I'm concerned for the poor thing. The tranny warrenties did not go up until 00+, meaning our 99's are left out in the cold. That really discourages me from using SS and racing and such. I'm seriously contemplating getting an aftermarket warrenty. Good luck, and keep us updated!

I've heard many instances of people with 99s with tranny issues....have had their trannies fixed/replaced at no charge ...but thats if you complain and pry enough..

IMO..if you keep at it and get the acura district rep as well as acura care involved..i'm sure you'll get your tranny fixed at no charge..or at least discounted.

oh but to answer the topic's question

this happened to me..

i think i was at about 55k miles on my 99 when both the tcs and check engine light turned on while driving on the way..scared the hell outta me..

but i took it in, thinking i was gonna have to pay a couple extra hundred bucks...I GOT IT FIXED AT NO COSTS...it appears that theres a build up of carbon or something in some valve that causes the tcs/check engine lights to turn on simultaneously...

that part of the engine has its own unique warranty which has a longer life than the 4 year/50k ..

good luck..but definitely take it in

acuraTlao is right, that part does have an extended warranty... I guess its a known issue in all TL's... its already been done to mine...

As for tranny issues, im 4,000 miles away from the factory warranty going buh bye, i wondering if i can some how CAUSE tranny failure without filling the computer with abuse codes

Funny though, i havent heard of issues with the '99's having tranny issues... i wonder how hard it would be to put in the 5 speed... little ECU upgrade... new shift gate? hmmm....

Hmm.. but now only the check engine light is on? It can't just be a loose gas cap can it? I always tighten to past the 3 clicks like it recommends. The only reason I ask is because the service rep at Sterling McCall (Houston) said there is an $80 "check-out" fee if the light is caused by something other than transmission. I think that's kind of lame esp since I purchased the so-called "full" Acura Care warranty.

Same thing just happened to me (57k miles). It happened right after I filled my tank up so I thought it was the gas cap. The TCS light reset fine after I turned the car off. I took it to the dealer and the EGR vavle was clogged. There was a recall on this back in 2000 I think (check the AllData bulletin) and my car hadn't been done.

Take your car to the dealer. If it is the EGR valve, the recall is good until 80k miles so you shouldn't be charged for the work.

rhizopod,

This just happened to my '99 2 weeks ago.. I took it in, they just had to modify/adjust my exhaust.. and that fixed it.. wasn't the tranny at all.. i've got 33K milies..

The gusy also suggested to me when i called to schedule appnt. that sometimes at gas stations they don't put the gas tank lid all the way back on.. you're supposed to hear 2 - 3 clicks when you're tightening the lid.. try that and drive it around for a couple of days.. see if that helps.. (I didn't help me)

Good luck!

thats exactly what it was....definitely take it in...

i had to agree to that initial fee too..just to bring the car in..but once they found out that it was the EGR valve covered under warranty, then they waived the fee..

it might depend on the dealership too..i'm sure if you go to a sketchy dealership, then they'll probably charge u anyways.

Well I just got the call from Sterling McCall Acura.. apparently there is nothing wrong with my car! He suggested a "rich fuel mixture" might have possibly clogged an injector... apparently nothing wrong with the transmission either... what do y'all think about this, and what exactly is a rich fuel mixture?

Same thing here. Now everytime I go to get gas, I always tell the attendant to turn the gas cap a lot.

BTW, when my check engine light went on and stayed on for like 2 weeks, I took it in to the dealer. Found out it was a clogged EGR valve. Everything was fixed under warranty.

Oh, did you guys get your ignition switch fixed? Cause there is a recall for 99 TL's ignition switch. I got mine replaced under warranty also.

I had both done at the same time.

The morning I took my car in the Check Engine light reset before when I started my car. So even if it resets after a while I'd take it in, it could still be the EGR.
