Post TCS Active in NJ Snowstorm

Last night commuting home in the eye of the snow/ice storm in NJ was a nightmare. 4.5 hours to travel approximately 30 miles - I don't think I was traveling above 20mph at any time...so I had lots of opportunity to see the yellow TCS light flicker. Probably saved my butt several times, as I saw numerous cars spinning out and countless others getting stuck on the entrance ramp to route 78. Hope all you Jersey TL drivers got home with your baby safe last night.

Thumbs up

I too drove home in NJ, and could see cars slipping and sliding...there was even a multi-car/van pileup on Route 28, when some moron felt he wanted to be Mario Andretti in the snow......the TL kept going, never stopping or sliding. I could see the TCS light blinking off and on, but never could feel any perceptible difference...basically the car kept going even in snow that was about 4 inches deep. Of course, I was also driving pretty slowly...

BTW, my tires are Michelin Pilots XGT-Z4 Ultra-high performance all-seasons, in the 225/55-ZR-16 size......

There must be something wrong with my mother in-laws TL (ex-my wife's car).

Last night on 880 going south to san jose around 8:25. I nearly lost control 3 times. The rain was heavy, but not to a point that driving would be dangerous.

I was travelling on the right most lane (after the dixon landing exit). I guess my car must hit a puddle of water at 60mph. The two right tires slipped, and the car moved sideway for about 1 feet. I nearly hit the concrete block on the right hand side. Same thing happend when I try to exit onto 237, the car slipped again, this time the car slipped across from left lane to the right (was going about 30mph).

Question? Does TL's traction control only works at low speed?????

Yes ! The TCS in the TL is a "low speed" TCS. But I am surprised at the problems you have had in your ma-in-law's TL, since I have travelled in raging rain-storms/snow-storms in the TL, and it was rock-stable at all speeds..... Maybe you have a defective car.....or you may need to check your tires....my tires incidentally are Michelin Pilot XGT-Z4 225/55-ZR-16 Ultra-high performance All-seasons, fitted onto the stock TL rims....

Also, I have a couple of friends who have the IS300, and without exception, they would prefer to be in a car like the TL during a rainstorm/snowstorm, since the IS300 is supposed to be extremely squirelly and difficult to control when the weather goes bad (scary in snow).....typical of a RWD vehicle...if you have the equivalent of VSA or TCS or whatever in the IS300, it would reduce the scary effects of the RWD car a bit, but still would not be as effective as a FWD/AWD car...however in bone-dry weather, the IS300 should prove to be a good and stable handler (better handler in bone-dry weather than the TL)...

Just my 2c

It took me 90 minutes to get from 7th avenue and 31st street, to the entrance of the lincoln tunnel(2 blocks) I drove about 20 miles to where I needed to go and it took 4 hours.

IMO, the TL's TCS isn't that bad. At least we have something to help us even if it's just "slow speed" TCS. I have not had any problems in rain or snow.

Are your XGTZ4s pretty quiet (quieter than the stock tires) on the highway? Good handling at high speeds (70+ mph)?

I live on a hill. Saw a helpless Mustang slidng into the curb repeatedly. I laughed for a while. I started loosing grip up my hill. I stopped laughing. The traction control is weak. I feel that there's too much initial torque and the wheels aren't able to grip in the snow. Am I the only one?

The Michelin Pilot XGT-Z4s are a bit noisier than the stock TL tires....but the grip and handling at higher speeds ?...phenomenal... grips the road like the paw of a tiger...I have driven with these Ultra-high performance All-season tires in a couple of snow-storms till date....every time, they performed like a champ...
