I have a 00 TL-P with about 45K, and would like to make the switch to synthetic oil. Yes, I know, 45K is a little late to the party, but I’ve had the car for less than a year and am just now catching on to the benefits of synthetic. I’ve read numerous posts about Mobil One and am wondering if everyone is still gung-ho about this brand? Also, I’m in VA where we have “cool” winters (down in single digits on cold days) and warm summers (90’s). What weight should I use? Finally, I’m planning on heading out to Florida soon, should I change weights when I get down there (since it will be warmer year round)? If so, what weight should I change to? Thanks in advance!

I agree with CBS ... all are great choices.
Dont worry about cold temps.. It gets to -30's here and Mobil1
is very good for such environments,
You may want to add a good oil filter like K&N or Napa Gold.

Thanks all! One last question, our cars take about 5 quarts per oil change - about how much does a case of 5w-30 go for? And I'll look into better oil filters too.

I just switch my oil w/ Mobil 1 Synthetic
, and a FRAM Oil Filter
... So will the Fram oil filter last 6 months with the synthetic oil? I tried to find other Oil Filter brands and I could only find FRAM or Penzoil... Clearly I had to go with FRAM.

I just called my dealer and asked them if they would stick the mobil 1 in during my next oil change if I provided it to them (otherwise they want like $50 for a mobil 1 oil change). The service rep. said "Sure, but how many miles are on your car?" I told him I'm closing in on 45K and he said that I shouldn't switch because it would "harm" the engine. He wouldn't elaborate on what "harm" meant, but was pretty sure of himself. Up until this point, I've never heard anyone say that there is a cutoff point where someone can not switch from mineral to synthetic. Is this guy just blowing smoke??

Ya that seems to be the story I get from ALL mechanics I talk to about this same thing. But if you read on here, people have done it after many miles without any problems...yet.
I believe that the way the synthetic and regular "sets" on the seals in your engine is different, and switching to synthetic could release some harmfull "stuff" from the walls of your engine and seals. Weather this is true or not or if it even really hurts anything, is up to you and who you believe. I just use the regual Mobil 1 oil - non synthetic.
I dont believe for a min. that synthetic really does that much of a difference in normal driving. If you drive hardcore, in dusty conditions, and dont change your oil for 8000 miles, then you may have some benifits. Other than that, any good quality oil with the SAE 5W30 weight should be just fine.
In other words, if you are nervous to change - dont. you arent missing out.

The only think I may suggest is before you switch to the synthetic... run a shot of Auto-rx in the system prior. It's well regarded as a genuinly good engine flush. (take a look on the net)

the only time you dont want to switch to synthetic on higher mileage engines would be like if it already burned oil or had alot of valve tapping, or it already leaked quite abit
