suggestions needed

Hi everyone,

I wanted to add switches to my sunglass holder (more or less like below pic). Instead of having a plexi glass though I want to use a material that can be painted and resemble the plastic which surrounds the the sunglass compartment. I got quoted from a couple of shop which would redo the entire piece in fiberglass looks awesome and OEM but it would cost 400 bucks. I am trying to do it myself to save money but at the same time if it is going to come out I might have to spend the 400.00. Any help/suggestion would be greatly appreicated. Thanks

I would get it done professionally because if you mess it up it's gonna cost you more than $400..May I ask where you getting this done at ?

One of the places was street effects, there really isnt much to mess up, I already removed the sunglass holder compartment, now it's only a matter of finding suitable material and placing it were the sunglass compartment use to be.

Well I would probably put about 5 - 6 switches. One switch would flip between navi and dvd screen, another would turn on and off my tv headrest screens (dont want them playing with no one in the back seats) and a couple more surprises. The switches could control anything you like. I am looking for a material which I could use in place of the plexi glass in the above photo, something I could paint beige and resemble the surrounding trim.

It's always convenient to shell out the cash and have something done for you. But there is no greater satisfaction than doing it yourself and enjoying the results everytime you get in the car.
Give it a shot...material cost should be minimal. But make sure you know exactly what and how you want it done before starting.
Good luck.

Amen, to that. It isnt so much the money it's the fact that I really dont think it is that hard to do. After all I am halfway done. But I agree with you 100%, there is nothing like that "I did it" feeling when you get in the car and look it at everytime.

I would suggest you don't get rid of the sunglass holder. Instead, create a box that fits snuggly where the sunglasses would go and mount the switches to that box so you essentially open the sunglass holder, and you reveal the hidden switches. It also makes it so you don't have to match the trim 100%.

Do a search on this forum (or maybe someone will post) about how people mounted the VAFC controller in the sunglass holder.
