Question SportShift Question....problem?

I was driving home today and hit about 80 mph in 3rd gear (within range). The engine bucked (revved about 4 times) despite constant pressure on the accelerator, and the RPMs flew into the red. I took my foot off of the gas and moved from sportshift back into D5. The car seemed to run fine after that. I have read here that the gas shits off at 6500 rpm. Could that be the issue, or should I take it in and have it checked? I only have 1200 miles on the car...

hehe, I see youre testing out your car some after that 1000mile break-in. I'd have that checked out, but theyd probably claim the problem could not be reproduced.

Shits off? Too funny.

Yes it is the fuel cut-off in the red line. Don't worry, but definitely keep an eye on the tach in the future. Scared me the first time too.

Do you really think I should take it in, or just chalk it up as inexperience? I have read everyone's posting on the performance of this car, and feel good that I was patient with the break-in. All I can say is Cahones! Cahones! This car has Cahones. CAHONES!

You should get that checked. Car shitting off is definitely not good for the car or the road.

Oh, Adam, I am waiting for a sheet of burlwood finish to come in and I will show you pics of the Startac holder. Are you familiar with the Navigator plug-in handsfree kit?

Ok, i was just wondering why they even made the sequential sportshift if you can't redline all the way like a manual. And don't tell me it's a safety device used to protect the car from dumbasz drivers. Is there any way to stop the car from cutting off fuel at 6,500 rpms?

Well, maybe not just from dumbaszzes, but from the lag intrinsic to an "auto-manual" tranny. Unlike a "real" manual, where shifting is a simple mechanical action, there's a lag when you up- or down-shift on the SS. Imagine someone going just past redline and then pushing the SS up to shift. It takes 1-2 seconds to actually shift and by then the engine may have been horribly damaged.

Such a driver may still fall under "dumbasz" but is part of the majority of the TL's target buyers: automatic drivers who want some fun, not enthusiasts who redline all the time (or else they'd have made a TL with a manual transmission). SportShift is more fun than a simple automatic, but it's still an automatic. It's a toy, not a tool.

BTW -- is it a fuel cut-off if you go past redline, or an auto-shift?

I believe it's like this:

1) fuel cut-off
2) fuel cut-off
3) auto-shift up 1 gear

It may be 3 fuel cut-offs before shifting. I wasn't driving the car when it happened. It sounded really bad though. I couldn't stay mad at the driver (my girlfriend), she's a hottie!

That's correct for 00-01 but not for the 99s We don't have auto-shift. We just try to hold on for 8 seconds.

Yeah, it's cool except it didn't have an amplified speaker like mine. Can't wait to see though.

That would account for the bucking/revving noise I heard. Rev-Rev-Rev-upshift. Ok, I feel better now.

Adam- they have a new one out that is FM modulated - turn your radio to 88.7 and you can hear through the car's speakers. Can't wait 'til I'm finished...
