just checking...i have a few skeptical cousins and friends that think M3's are the cars with the superior SMG transmission--the only ones that won't upshift when redlined...I was like..the TL doesn't either..they were like..ya right.

the only gear that the 00-03 TL will shift automaticly from is first. the 99 didnt and the TSX doesnt
so the design of our sportshift is similar to the SMG concept of manually shifting gears--except ours shifts up/down between 1-2...good..I can feel confident driving the TL around saying it won't upshift...those skeptics. My cousin was bragging about being able to shift--I was like our TL does it too--he was well it must upshift when you redline--I was like no it doesn't--he just gave me a little look of disbelief.

So if i put my gear all the way down to D1 will i start faster? like do i just keep switching up as it redlines? elaborate for me alittle more please..

Any other gears, it won't upshift. You will just sit there banging off the rev limiter.
The 1st and 2nd generation SMG were based on an automatic type transmission, but the 3rd generation SMG (as found in the newer M cars) was conceived and engineered as an SMG unit from the beginning. First and second gears are placed in the strongest part of the transmission and other gears distributed accordingly, and so it has a really weird shift pattern. You would go insane shifting that manually. But the computer won't. It can precisely perform shifts in 65 milliseconds. On the new M6 and M5, I believe it has like 7 different shift maps.
Bottom line is, our SportShift is prehistoric compared to the SMG, DSG, etc. These units actually have clutches that are operated by the computer; with our system, you're just overriding the shift commands.
And like Kris said, BMW's SMG has nothing on the Ferrari F1 transmission. Engineered by Magnetti Marelli, it is basically the same (but differently tuned) unit as Formula-1 cars (yeah, the one that Michael Schumacher drives).
