Question Speed acceleration sooo slow after 100 mph

I have a '99 TL-p

Why is it so damn slow after 100? I mean, i haven't really gone out to read up on this yet.. haven't check manuals or dealerships.. But it just feels like it's governed at 100, but if you stay with the speed and keep flooring it.. it goes up slowly..
I got it up to 115 few days ago, had to shutdown at that.. was coming up on a Cop-spot..

It's because of our 4th (overdrive) gear. It'll take a while but the speed will pick up again when vtec kicks in 4th.

To solve this problem just get headers (I also have an intake). That's what I did. And in 3rd gear I can usually get up to ~122 mph before I shift to 4th. I also went up to 147 mph but it did take a while.

BTW, I also have a 99 TL.

Ahh.. ok, thnx for the explaination.

do headers increase the 0 - 60 time?

By the way.. I'm in jersey too.. Central (Hamilton).. where's a road that I can test the speed? I've never been over 125mph..
in any car..

It's not too bad after 100mph. If you think the TL is bad, go try a 4 cyl. car. They take forever to get from 90 to 100. I've had my 99TL up to 152 and had nothing left.

Keep in mind, the TL isn't exactly aerodynamic. It'd got a lot of resistance against the wind. Every time you double your speed, the wind resistance force quadruples. <Captain Obvious> If you're doing 100mph, the wind resistance is quadruple that of if you were doing 50mph. </Captain Obvious> It takes a good bit of power to sustain a speed of 120mph. It takes even more to not only push through the wind @ that speed but to also overcome the weight of the car, the exponentially increasing wind resistance, etc. Rolling resistance of your tires will also play a role.

You can install Comptech headers which won't void the warranty

So much money is involved with headers.

On long car trips from Auburn, AL to Atlanta, GA.... my 99 TL-P got up to 147 with a whole carload of crap in the back.... it was so full I could barely see out the rearview mirror, plus the trunk had no space left.... and it did it fairly quickly. 125/130-147 was a bit tough though, but I was pretty surprised... Things literally flew by me, and I was scared to death riding on near bald stock tires (damn things). I found the TL pretty impressive, of course, my old Infiniti I30 would only do 125.......

Headers do not increase 0-60 time. It only helps in the higher range.

I got my top speed on Rt 280 in West Orange @ 3 am.

Man, you guys are crazy! I would be so scared traveling that fast. I hope to God you never blow a tire at that speed...

147 MPH?

How did y'all get your TL-Ps up that fast? I swear I couldn't get mine past 130, I tried several times between Houston and Austin.. and she just wouldn't go any faster. My car is completely stock. It's a 99 TL-P. Also I remember reading on some website that the top speed was 130, can't remember where though. Also, are y'all riding on stock tires? Because if you changed the size the speedometer will be off, esp. at those high speeds. I have 225/55/16 Yoko AVSs.

Where the hell you running 100mph in Hamilton? The only road I can think of is 295.

I better not catch you running down Nottingham Way like that! Don't even think of the farms behind Foxmoor either!

Speed kills my friend. Just ask Mr. MR2Kwik that died under the route 1 bridge. Poor kid, 17 years old. He's burried 20 feet from my mother.

RIP Steve P, MR2Kwik. We will remember you.

Do we all live in Hamilton? Wow theres like 3 people on this forum who are from around here. Does ne body go to the acme shopping center on rt33? theres a blue TL there. Check it out.

BTW if you want to go over 100 mph, go on 195 exit 4b heading towards trenton, thats a long stretch of straight-away. its a well open area at night. But becareful doin it.

Yea.. I did it on 295, going South, on my way to work.. Coming home on 295 South, around exit 60, the road is sooo soft... and it curves just a little bit.. feels like you're gliding.. but cops could be anywhere on that stretch

I'm always careful if I do go that fast though..

Actually, also on route 133, heading towards priceton.. that stretch is always empty and no cops when I'm coming home at around 2 - 3am.. i like to punch it there too once in a while..

the road kinda sucks there though.. so gotta be careful

I grew up in Hamilton, live in East Windsor now. I checked out that blue TL a few months back when I was getting a salad. It was phat. Even my wife liked it. That color looks really nice with the underbody kit.

Im jealous, the fastest I took my TL-S to was 140 and 138 w/rims. But then I get too damn paranoid when I drive that fast. You know when you have 18s on 40s are you actually going faster or slower than the speed shown?

Don't headers help higher range engine speed which is not the same as the cars mph speed. If you get more horse at 4500 rpm in first gear how could it not help your 0-60 time.

Yes.... 99 TL-Ps will go about 150.... but like I said, I wouldn't dare do it again, not on stock tires.

And for those who live in Ontario - thats where I'm from, I live in Atlanta now... but you guys gotta watch out for the OPP!

i have an 02 tl-s and got it to 147 on stock tires and it wouldnt go any faster. after i got my rims (18's w/ 225/40's) my speedometer said 156 which is bull because the cars are electronically limited at 147.
TLegendGS, with 18/40's the rim/tire is actually not as tall as stock so the speedometer would be inflated because the tires are spinning at the same rate but not going as far because of the hight difference. with taller tires than stock youd be going faster than your speedometer shows and this is on a perfectly calibrated car. the speed difference is really nominal, especially at lower speeds. its only very pronounced above 85-90ish. anyone feel free to bash if im wrong.
in my car at 45 im doing 43.9 and at 70 im doing 68.8, at 100 im doing 97.3 my car is totally stock with regard to the engine. i got these figures for my car from a friend of mine who is a cop. He and i went to the private airport by my house and they let us get on the runway to test these speeds. he parked on the taxiway at a specific spot toward the end i got up to speed and set the cruise control to make sure there was as little human error as possible.

Have you recalibrated your speedometer?

----- That is completely untrue.. Headers do make their power in the top of the RPM band (from about 4500 on up), But it will affect 0-60 times since you use all of first gear and a good bit of 2nd doing it.

99 tl with intake, headers, exhaust and i run to 130 no problems. Me and blackshadow did a strong run to 125 like 3 times in a row on a highway a few months back. Now i have a full cat back and my pulling power at high speeds is crazy

The TL/TL-s are drag limited to around 147. There is no electronic speed governor. Maybe in a downhill stretch with a tail wind, you may be able to go faster !

:wow: Oh, my God, you guys are crazy, one little wrong move of the wheel, tire blow or another car, whatever, do you guys like to live to an older age and enjoy cars forever!!!

If you were on a track, that's one thing, but on public roads, you are nothing more than just plain nuts, sorry but that's how I feel.

You could flame me or anything else, but I don't care!

Was it clocked using an external calibrated device or was it done by observing the speedometer ?

If it was done by observing the speedometer, then I would not go too much by that. An acceptable error ratio on the speedometer is around 4-10% and the number would get magnified at higher speeds. Thus when it showed 150mph on the speedometer, the car truly might have been travelling at 135-144mph, depending on how much the speedo was off. JMHO.

Also, as I said, the drag limitation to 147mph is under a no-wind condition. It is possible to exceed 147mph with a tail wind and maybe even a downhill stretch. The bottomline is that there is no electronic governor that would artificially restrict us to 147mph.......the only limitation being the aerodynamic drag factor.
