Some touch up painting today

Lately Ive been working on my projector retrofits.

https://acurazine.com/forums/2g-tl-1999-2003-98/ups-came-snap-whats-come-725133/

But I'm waiting for the shrouds to come in and I love working on my car so I decided to fix this!

I live on a hill and during the winter stupid high school idiots slide all the way from the top to the bottom of the hill. Well some idiot ran head first into my car and that's what happened. I wanted to kick his stupid ass for messing up my car but considering he was bleeding and didnt look to good I let him go home. Kind of stupid because when I took my lip off the bumper was all cracked. Anyways I went to napa and had them mix me up my paint code. I ended up buying ssm paint, reducer, clear coat, and hardner.

The Paint is 2 to 1 ratio with the paint and reducer. The clear coat and hardner is 4 to 1. Anyways, I dont paint but I want to do it right instead of rattle can. All the shops I went to quoted me a lot for them to paint it!

Between coats I gave it about 5 mins and between base I waited 30mins before I sprayed on the clear. This is what the dude told me at Napa, and it turned out great!

Anyways, here are the results.

During painting.

Finished product.

Another angle.

Color is near perfect match, I have to wait for the paint to cure in the next few days and I'll cut/buff it out. Again, I am not a painter but I read a lot on painting before I jumped into it and I think it came out nicely. It got dark by the time I was done so I will have to wait till tomorrow before I can post some better pics since these came from my camera. Oh I repainted my lip kit because i rattle canned it when I picked it up the paint was dull looking. Side skirts will probably be tomorrow.

I didnt rattle can this. compressor and gun with the proper paint materials. I learned from experience, even if you use the best rattle can, doesnt look great, it'll be decent for a few months. The paint wont match, especially with the metallic in my paint color. And the clear, SEMS, which I find is the best rattle can clear, does not look nearly as glossy as the gun.

I have a smaller compressor, but it does the job. The gun is just a cheapo one, I'll probably invest in a good one down the road. But its just a cheap one you can buy anywhere, 1.4 tip, but I had that to paint various stuff, but you can get a similar one at harbor freight for under 20. All the paint I got at Napa, they mixed the ssm for me but you still need to mix paint/reducer before you paint. Total came out to be 71.79. But I have a gang of clear left, I would say I only used maybe 1/4 of it. My pint of SSM, I still have more then half left. I resprayed my bumper, front lip, and rear lip. So it gives you an idea of how much you need. I think the key to painting this stuff is to have patience and do it proper. Between layers, give it like 5 mins between coats and 30 mins between base and clear. I had no runs, at all. Oh, i suggest buying a mask, it was really bad, glad I bought one, 25 bucks at home depot.

How did you set up ventilation? It looks like you sprayed it in your garage. How did you avoid overspray and did you use any heat lights or anything?

no, all newbie action. I did put a window fan to suck out the crap outside. Thats about it, no heat lights, no nothing. Hehe like I said, I'm not a pro or anything, I did as much as I can for the price. If I put in much more it will bring the cost up nearly to what it would be if I took it to be painted. I had some clear plastic covers I used to hang on the ceiling to cover the sides, just enough so it would not overspray on the other cars.

suggestions? no lol, sorry I just have a smaller compressor and a cheap gun. Its not the best but it does the job and way better then a rattle can. But I can tell if I had a good gun the paint would be better. I think most compressors should do the job, you arent painting a whole car so you should be fine. Cover up your garbage and throw some water on the ground and spray away. I barely got any dust on it and the ones I did I can cut/buff it out.

I didnt primer much, most of the time you can sand down to the base paint and spray over that. But since I had to sand down the damage area, I had to primer that area but I had primer from before. Coats, I'm not sure, I shot it until it looks good, but I would say around 5-6 light coats and clear was about the same.

make sure you use a water trap in line with your air supply..water beads can be a biootch when they get in-especially the clear coat..
