Snow Cables

I have a 2002 TL type S stock. i was going to drive up to mammoth this Thursday, i bought cables last season but did need to put them on. went to practice this weekend, looked in the owner book and it said not to put chains on a Type –S. Dose anyone have any experience?

It is all about your tires and how good of a driver you are.

It is the tread pattern, tread life that is left, and the quality of the tire.

What kind of tires do you have?

Does it snow a lot where you live?

Have you ever thought about snow tires?

Do you have tread left on the tires?

Do you put weight in the trunk?

I live in Los Angeles so getting snow tires are what im trying to do. They are mostly new tires on the car, I just replaced two of them in the last 3-4 moths and a third tire 5-6 months ago, so I do have good life in the tires. They will be weight in the car, two people, plus skis and gear. im going to need to double check the tires, i can remember off hand, but im sure i didnt get snow tires since i do live in LA.

OK- lets back up and read the owner manual again- based on my 01s book:
it says use only type S Cable chains (and not regular chains)
Not Type S model TL cannot use them!! just use the correct chains, type S chain

Type S chain is the low profile cables, not the old school type with big links
Its a clearence issue on the inner side of the tire to steering and suspension parts

read book again- practice putting chains on at home, some find it faster to remove the wheel and install its chains then remount on car
Beats laying in the snow!

Ca has chain requirements in the mountains all the time and the only exception is 4wd with studded tires

The TL does fine on cables- max speed 35mph and drive gently

From my 2002 book:

Type S
Do not install any types of chains
or cable-type traction devices on
your vehicle.
That being said, I have used cables on my 02 TL-S with no problem for a couple a weeks during a huge snowstorm. Clearance was fine (not dropped.)

yeah i have a 02 type s and my owners manual said not to install any type of chains or cables, i bought cables last lease and did use them, red the manual this past weekend then i was going to practice putting them on and the manual said not to do it.
Do you know why, is it a clearance issue, is the mannual just being overly safe? Has anyone done it? should i just take buy cables for my gf civic and take her car to Mammoth.

there is apparently a difference between the 01 and the 02 TL type -s in regards to this issue bc my manual said not to but if you have and its was fine it save me another $60 on chains for my gf civic

Then he is mistaken with his 01s.

The Manual for my 02TL-S
say:
Type S
Do not install any types of chains
or cable-type traction devices on
your vehicle.

Has anyone done it any way?
Did it cause damage?
I do have the type S Cable chains

sorry- my 01 is type P and the manual does allow for typs S cables only- and it also has 16 inch rims so that may be the differance

Test fit them at home and see if anything will hit

no offense, but dont listen to this guy. he's from the east coast and they have different living and driving conditions.

get snow chains and read the label of which size fits your overall diameter. its easy

last forum i was at had a huge argument between west coasters and east coast people because over there, conditios get so harsh you need snow tires and a lot of them never even heard of a snow chain..

but yeaa, use your common sense bro.

btw, just make sure its really tight. i know when theres a storm, people hate having to go out and put them on in the freezing weather so they do it quick and loosely.

thats why they provide so much tv footage of worlds worst.... crash slide on ice bang! drivers--

Once the tires are on with the chains- place a piece of cardboard under the tires and turn the wheels- well have someone turn the wheels while you lay on the ground and watch
If its going to hit it will be a side part of the chain or fenderlip

bungee cords offer extra tightening when used on the outer side- in a triangle pattern, look at any semi truck for illustration

so i found out the the 02 TL type s comes stock on 17`s when the standard 02 TL comes stock on 16`s and its that difference that which is why they put that "Type S
Do not install any types of chains
or cable-type traction devices on
your vehicle." in the owners manual of the 2002 TL Type S
