Should I Sell or Keep?? Opinions!
hey all....i'm hoping some of you can throw out some opinions and viewpoints on whether I should keep my TL or sell her
99 TL with 95000 miles on her
Firepepper Red, Parchment Interior, Navi
I really do love the car, but over the last 2 years, it's been giving me trouble
First was the tranny going out last January
Then the EGR valve needed replacing in May - which Acura Client Services covered
Then this week, the Idle Control Valve went out and was replaced today - paid 160 bucks for
i don't wanna be stuck with a money pit, but the car is paid for, which is nice
and it's a pretty nice car in very good shape
any opinions??

Here is my suggestion. If you feel that your old TL is in need or will need significant $ to keep going, it's time to get rid of it. It will be harder and harder to get decent $ for it the more you go over 95K. I finally got TL last week to replace my '97 Camry with 173K miles on it. I was lucky to sell it by owner as the dealer only offered peanuts for it. The majority of the people were not interested in the car with such high mileage. At least it never gave me any troubles while I owned it.
If you can afford/justify getting the new or certified TL, go for it. You should be able to get a good deal on remaining '05s.

The 99 TL, imho, is the one to own. I like the second generation body better than the third and unless you have enough spare cash to buy a 2004 TL you are going to be buying yourself transmission problems for your upgrade. 95k is not that many miles for an Acura and it should last for at least another 100k without major failures I would estimate.... again just my opinion, but I would drive it until you get close to 200k on it, sell it for almost nothing but enjoy the next 5 years car payment free.
You could always switch car brands but I recently purchased my TL so obviously I believe it is the best value for the price. To me you would be either spending a ton, or downgrading.

I have 92k miles on my '99 and I havent had any problems at all. But the ones you mentioned are very minor (other than the tranny, did you get a replacement?). Basically you said your biggest point, your car is paid off. Say you have to spend some over the next few years on it, that will still be cheeper overall than paying a car payment, and probably more for insurance also.
I will keep my TL for a very long time unless I fall into a bucket of money!!! (not likely).

first off....thanks for everyone's opinion
mangust - i didn't mean that i was thinking of replacing my 95K car with a 75K car...sorry for being ambiguous
i meant that, of those people on the board who's car is past about 75K, how many problems do they see, on average??
my tranny did get replaced, and this last repair, the idle air control valve, is the only thing i've had to pay for - which was 160 bucks
i know that i really haven't been that unfortunate - it just seems that everywhere i turn on this board, someone's car is broke down, or something
but i guess that's the nature of it - if everyone's car was running perfect, they wouldn't be posting, right??
i'm thinkin hard about this because if i were to sell her, i likely would replace it with either a motorcycle and tough it out in bad weather, or a cheap car because i don't want car payments
again, thanks for all the replies and if you have any other thoughts, keep em coming

the only real problem that people say on this site is with the tranny - not like these cars "break down" all the time with other random things - and since you drive the '99 TL (the better tranny of the 2nd gen) your mileage might as well be 9500

GET RID OF IT!!! I just got rid of mine.... but I upgraded to a NBP type-S!! "I say god damn" she's fast and soon will be furious.... I swapped springs from my old 99TL to the 02TL-S just yesterday... what a biatch to do.. fun though I'll get pics of the car soon... the headers and kit are going on soon..

Do you really feel like taking on another monthly payment for a new(er) car? Those problems aren't too bad at all for a car with 95k miles. It's basically free to own it right now, and it's serving you well. I say keep it.

I personally think that if the numbers were right, I would upgrade to the Type-S.
