Should I get an aftermarket warranty?

Hey All,

I'm abut to pick up an 02 type s auto with 80k. I've read about the transmision stories on this forum so i'm a bit concerned that my trans will go bad after I buy the car. It felt fine on the test drive which was only 20 minutes.

They are offering an extended warranty for $1900 do you think it's worth the money to get it, or just pay for trans work if its ever needed.

The carfax is clean. The car was bought new in florida, then traded in at around 55k, bought at auction from my dealer who sold it at that time as an acura certified pre-owned. It looks like the owner then traded the car back into the same dealer for something else. As it stands, the car is $11k

Since you have a 2002 TL, the transmission may still be covered by Acura's 7 year + 9 month extended warranty. The warranty period starts on the original sales date for the car. Call Acura with your VIN number and ask when the warranty expires. (Salvage title cars are not covered.)

Acura should also be able to tell you if the transmission was ever replaced under the warranty previously.

And be sure to spend some time reading the Tranny Failure Thread before you buy the car:

https://acurazine.com/forums/2g-tl-problems-fixes-117/tranny-failure-thread-566833/

I wouldn't let the transmission reliability problems keep me from buying a 2nd gen TL but you want to go in with your eyes open. There are serious reliability problems with the 2nd gen transmissions.

And you might want to have an independent mechanic check the car out before you buy it. The Carfax reports can miss a lot and the "Acura certified pre-owned" label also doesn't guarantee much.

Thanks for the info. I just called Acura and I was told that vehicle is covered under the extended warranty for another 13 months or 109k. The lady on the phone was real helpful she also told me that the oil jet(?) recall was done, but she did not know if they replced the jets or the trans, her records did not go back that far. The recall was done in '05. She also said something about OPDS warranty extension.

You're welcome. Since you have another 13 months of warranty coverage on the transmission, I would pass on the $1900 extended warranty.

So I got it last night . The dealer did some digging for me and found out that they replaced the trans on 8/07 when the car had 60k on it. From my understanding this trans should be the updated one(?) I never buy a car without checking if there is a good community behind it, this site has already helped me out big time, thanks!
