Should I Buy This???

im buying a car next week and my top choice is the acura tl 3.2

however i only have like 9-12gs to buy one so my options are limited

i found a 99 3.2 tl, black, with 105,000 for 10gs at a local dealer

every other TL i have seen is like 2 or 3 grand more but they have less miles

do you think this is a bad buy?
are TLs with high mileage unreliable?
realistictly, how many miles can a well serviced TL run for
im going to ask about the tranny swap

hit me back with some helpful info thanks

BTW...if anyone in the Bay Area wants to sell their TL holler at me

a well maintained 3.2TL or any honda/acura will last for a long time. i would say well over 200,000 miles. if its from the dealer, will they give you a limited warranty for a year? 3 months? since its a 99, the tranny should not have any problems. however, you should ask about coverage on that too... good luck

100k miles on these cars isnt anything as long as you maintain them - nothing special just normal stuff. You need to ask if it still has the original water pump and timing belt - the timing belt is VERY expensive to replace - around 100k miles is when it needs to get done, and most people put a new water pump on at the same time.

if that has been done, or they will hook you up with a good price on that, the rest of the car is good to go for a long time.

so far the only one ur looking at id go for is the 99 with 90k, u still get 10k on the transmission warranty and have atleast a year b4 u gotta worry bout the timing belt and water pump, i wouldnt get one without some kind of warranty , thats playing with fire on this car In my opinion. mine has 60k i bought it from the dealer off lease at 44k and it already went through a transmission and now they think the engine needs to be replaced, if there was no warranty id be screwed.

what year is your car? Also, he will not be able to get a TL with that low of miles for the kind of money he wants to spend. I got mine at 58k miles from the Honda dealership - no warranty, now over 2 years later and 25k miles later...0 problems.

If you wanna be a little faster then get the 2000 but the tranny might be a problem
To be safe get a 99 due to the tranny

Hey Liftedoff420,

I'm in exactly the same boat as you (same location, same price range, same considerations)... Here's what I've found:
'99 TL for 12175 (it's right under the 60k mile line though, so that's probably why it's so cheap)
http://used-cars.autos.yahoo.com/use...M9cHJpY2UmJmI9

'99 TL for 11800 (80k miles)
http://www.craigslist.org/eby/car/58139226.html

What do you guys think is a reasonable price for a 99 TL with 69.9k miles on it??

Anyway, good luck with your shopping. Tell me if you get any leads...

I'd think the first thing you want to do is determine what kind of service the cars have had, particularly the tranny. If you can't find out any info about the cars, I'd buy a high mileage '99 before any of the other model years simply because they are less prone, but not immune, to tranny problems. You might also want to make the sale conditional upon having a dealer give it the once over. You'll have to pay for this of course, but well worth it....assuming you have a dealer you can trust.

i bought my TL at 60k miles and it costed me 12k. its a 99 and i never had a problem yet except for the cat convertor, but i got that taken care of by warranty. if i were you, the 99 is probably the best.. i hear people are on their 3rd, 4th trannies and not even at 100k.. maintanence wise and cost effecient wise, the 99 is the best choice. it may not be quick, but it still feels great! im really happy about how much money i saved.. i had to choose between a lower miled 99 with a higher miled 01.. the price was similar, but i still chose the 99 just because i did research and this is the same thing people told me. 99 has the least to none in tranny failures. GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR CHOICE!

Nope. Didn't see those... if I had, I probably would've jumped on them... I only started getting interested in TLs midweek... but after test-driving one, I'm sold. Now the only problem is: where am I going to get my TL from?? (And at what price?)

Btw, can someone tell me how much a few scrataches of paint on the front and rear bumpers would cost to get fixed on a TL? It's a "light" scrape that discolors the paint.. Something that you might get if you scraped a pole while turning..

Sure, the prices seem like they're good, but how much is shipping going to cost? There aren't that many listings for cars in the Cali area....

What is the general feeling about using Ebaymotors to buy cars anyway? Doesn't shipping kill the deal?

Just try look for cars that are within a few hours drive. YOu can even check them out before bidding. I've seen a fair amount of cars on ebaymotors in the cali area.

Also, did you try cars.com

I know this is a different ballpark in price but I picked up my 2002 TL-S about 6 months ago for $18,000 with 38K miles on it. I looked for a year to find that deal, but anyways my point is that there are always better bargins out there. I saw a lot of 2000 Tl-P's out there for around 10-11grand with less than 80K on them.
good luck & Shop around.

Hmm.. prices are a bit higher around here.. Seems like most of the lower priced offers are for cars that have around 100k miles or above. For a '99 TL, is that a lot of miles? I feel like most people would consider such a car "well driven".

ever consider putting the 10 grand away and financing a used 02 with low miles for maybe 20grand and making payments, in the long run you could sell the 02 in a few years and probably be better off the 02 would have a higer resale value than a 99 with 200K miles on it if you buy the other car. or am I wrong?

color preferences? doesn't really matter. something that's nice and not disgusting... (of course, that's a completely subjective thing)

haha. even if we added 5k to our budgets, i doubt we'd be able to afford krnsleeper's car... (but certainly that would make our search easier)

With the dealer, you should try to work them. Since you know about the tranny problem and other issues (pealing of the B-pillars, timing belt recall, etc), go there and BS them into dropping the price because you have "concerns" and are "choosing between this TL and another car". Even if you're getting the 99 without the tranny problem, chances are the sales dept won't know the exact details about which TLs it applies to but will be aware that there are tranny problems with 2nd gen TLs. Maybe even sucker them into throwing in free extended warranty to close the deal.

So what's the going price for these things? Anyone know? Is under 13k realistic at all? Or are edmunds and kbb lying to us?

for under 13 gs the only TLs you can get are 99 with high mileage and no warranty

i wanted one of these but realized that it would be smarter to put a downpayment on a TL that has lower miles and still under warranty, i figured that if i was gonna pay more i want a 2002+ simply because they look sick as a muthafuckah

i saw a few nice 2002 TLs for around 18-20k, i was thinkin about putting like 10 grand down and paying off the rest....anyone kno the average monthly payment for something like this??
i could get my rents to take out a 10 grand loan and i would pay them back, might be cheaper than doing it from a dealership
