Rotor problems petition - MODs can you STICKY this?
I’ve had my TL for 9 months. I’ve had the rotors resurfaced twice, then they were replaced, now their warped again. This is within 28,000 miles. Everyone knows our cars have this problem, but the dealers are refusing to take care of it. Can everyone that had had these problems please state your year, model, mileage, and brief description of your rotor history? Please only post if you have had these problems. I want to have something to take to the dealer to show them. Add your e-mail address also if you can.

Sticky done.
Rotors warped at 14700 miles, dealer resurfaced all four rotors under warranty.
Rotors warped again at 30700 miles, dealer refused to do any warranty work on rotors. Escalated to Acura Client Services, who also initially refused to resurface rotors. Eventually agreed to "good will" (one time only) the fix under warranty. Dealer determined rotors too "baked" (as listed on the service invoice) to resurface--replaced front rotors only.
They've pretty much told me I'm on my own if it happens again. And judging by the pattern so far, I expect it to happen again in another 14-16K miles or so. Ridiculous on this kind of car. I don't drive this car any harder than my '97 Maxima, which has 112K miles on it, still on original rotors. Heck, I've still got 50% of my tread left on my stock Michelins at 32K miles--obviously not driven that hard.

Just had my rotors resurfaced at 15K miles on 2003 - Acura covered the cost of turning them, but chargedme for new pads. They said they would not turn them unless I replaced the pads.
We'll see how long these last.

Resurfaced at 26k miles, warped again at 40k. Dealer replaced all 4 rotors under warranty the 2nd time around. No problems with the service. Of course I'm out of warranty now (52k), so I'll probably have to pay for it after another 10k miles or so.

I have had warped rotor problems on every Honda I have owned (97 Civic, 97 Prelude, 99 Accord, 00 S2000, 02 TL-S). Each time I have walked into the dealer(s), told them that the rotors had prematurely warped and made an appointment to have them inspected and repaired/replaced. In all circumstances they have turned them or replaced them (in the case of the TL, they turned them, then replaced a few thousand miles later when they warped again--this time they replaced the pads as well no charge). I have gotten the "goodwill" speech before, and politely said that replacing a defective part isn't "goodwill" it is taking care of a defective part, and that is all.
For me the key was that the pads showed minimal to average wear so they knew the rotors were just plain bad. Why they continue to put cheap ones on is beyond me (don't their warranty records show the same items being replaced over and over?). For a company as cost-effective as Honda, it isn't a smart move.
I'm not sure why dealer responses are so varied, maybe I just lucked out (Lord knows I have enough other bad luck to offset it!).

2002 TL-S -- Front brakes resurfaced under warranty at 12K miles. By 24K miles my rotors felt warped again -- dealer refused to fix under warranty. Said goodbye to Acura brake parts and bought aftermarket pads and rotors.

Someone had also posted a link to a picture of the actual TSB, but I could not find that.

Damn, does anyone have a TL that doesn't have a problem?
Anyhow, I had my rotors resurfaced @ 15k but then I had the same problems @25K and the dealer installed cross-drilled rotors in place of the original rotors. I didn't know that Acura had cross-drilled rotors as OEM?....anyhow, I was planning to go with cross-drilled anywho, so they saved me money. By the way, they didn't charge a dime....it's all about *****in' right....

'99 TL rotors warped at 18K and 28K
"02 TLS warped 20K and 32K
Dealership resurfaced my rotors when the mileage was low and now they refuse to even look at them unless I paid for the job.
Its probably because these darn rotors are the same crap they put on other American cars.

This is ridiculous........I'm starting to notice the rotors wear out too and that was at 40kmi.
I've had a 92 Intergra with about 100k mi and it was never this bad?!?! I guess it's a hit or miss with the dealers covering this problem......and with my luck I'll probably have to end up paying
02 TLS- 40k mi
booking appointment with dealer!

I didn't realize at first what my problem was until my friend said I should get my brakes checked. Then I found the threads here. I'm getting them serviced this week, will report results.
I'm at 14K miles 2002 TL-S.
I had noticed the vibration and thought I might need a wheel balancing. Uhoh!

question
1.) what causes rotors to warp? is it excessive load?
reason why im asking this... is that i recall that the TL uses the Accord's chassis as it's starting platform.
im uncertain... but just by visual... the TL rotors appear to be the same as the Accord's.
my guess is that Acura was too lazy and half-assed to make an effort to upsize the brake rotors... also probably a way to drop costs of the car... not taking into account that the TL's are significantly heavier AND pack more horsepower as well.

warped under 10k then again not long after it was done...
It's really bad..
any of u noticed when u turn the steering wheel and brake..sometimes... the brake acts weird? a bit of shakin when punpin the brakes.
I think acura really nees to upgrade our brake system... esp drilled rotors and improved brakepads.. It's supposed to be a LUXURY HONDA car!!!

mine warped at 13000 got it resurfaced and then warped again 2000 miles later... dealer refused to resurface and said i was braking hard... another 3000 miles later meet up at dealer with another guy that had same problem and both of our cars got resurfaced... now i am at 21000 and starting to feel it again... my friends is already warped again... they need to do something about these brakes.. i would say if you want the dealer to do it you have to show up with more then 2 people with same problem... maybe then they will do something..

Warped at 7300 miles on a 03" TLS, dealer resurfaced and replaced pads as "good will" gesture. I got a gesture or two for them, I have a feeling I'll be back again. I think I'm going to end up getting a Brembo set up very soon. This just isn't worth the hassle.

The rotors on the accord are smaller than the TL, but still even then, the rorots and pads we have should be able to handle us no problem, i believe its some other sort of design flaw in the brake system....
oh well, when i get enough of you guys up here, hopefully we cal all get something done at the dealer by bringing this thread in.

So guess what, driving today, i felt something "new" when i was braking... something ive never felt before, and then it hit me "Oh, THAT'S what warped rear rotors feel like!!!"
Im so done with this....

I'm almost at 10000 miles, no problems so far, hopefully I won't develop any problems between 12000-14000 like a lot of you seem to. Here's a link to information about bedding in your brakes which should help to prevent rotor warping:
LINK
I think it might be a good idea to take a look at the link and if you do get new rotors and pads try their method of bedding in your brakes.

Warped at 7200 miles on a 03" TLS, dealer resurfaced and replaced pads. Drove about 2 miles through a little traffic, got the rotors a little warm and noticed that the rotors were still warped. Took it back to the dealer the next day and they replaced the rotors. These are just the wrong rotors for this vehicle and Acura corporate should support all dealers in replacing these through 50,000 miles or more as a "good will" gesture for true customer service support.

On my '02 TLS - resurfaced at 8k, rotors replaced at 21k, resurfaced at 28k, and were scheduled to be resurfaced again at 44k, but the car was totaled.
On my '03 TLS purchased in Jan '03 - resurfaced at 4k, with no problems since - car is at 10k.

Can you also email me with the petition results to the rotors because i am also having that problem and being given the run around with acura one of many issues that is causing me to file lemon law with them. The other two being my paint is spotted beyond belief even when you keep the thing waxed and also the main thing being my steering vibrating getting worse and worse. my email is Barrett13@cox.net Thanks again buddy

Hi fellas..new to the forum..but am an acura and nissan nut.
Anyways, I have a 02 TLS. Been through the rotor problems. ABSOLUTELY would not settle for simply 'resurfaced' rotors. Yea..thats like lets get them thinner so they heat more and warp more. Thats not a fix. Thats actually compounding the problem at hand. The fix is to install the new rotors..and install it right. Use the a torque wrench and hand torque all lug nuts to 85lbs. Thats made the rotors last for over 20K since I got them put on. Absolutely no vibration what so ever. I am actually surprised. Anyways, I did the torquing thing after the dealer installed the rotors and used the air gun to tighten the lug nuts. I came home and backed out all the wheels lugs and torqued them to 85lbs. Then I tried the same procedure on my 88 Legend Cpe (MINT!). The new rotors are in good shape on both. Try it out. Obviously if yours are already warped, it will not make sense till you put on a new set. Rgds, Nick.
(Oh yes, I realize that the torquing has less to do with the actual installation...more with finishing up the job right).

THATS AMAZING... WHAT DEALER? WHERE??
Remember: Dont forget to torque your wheels manually to 85lbs evenly across the board. That seems to be a little technicality people are skipping. It is a reason for premature rotor warpage in any brand of rotor in any car, American or Japanese or German. Uneven torque causes the rotor to move in a pattern where only some areas get caught really tightly when breaking and the areas that done stay colder. The areas that regularly heat up end up giving you the warped rotor NVH.
