Requesting Help Please

Firstly, Im new to AcuraZine. While searching the internet for answers to some questions, I find myself here. This seems like a great site with lots of valuable information! I have been a 'Honda Boy' for many years now, but my tastes have changed... leading me towards Acura. I have decided I want to purchase a 2nd Gen TL for my next car. I am hoping you guys could help me out with some questions and concerns in my next purchase...

1. After much research, and even a visit to the local Acura dealership, I am not able to figure out exactly which TL models have had the optional manual 6 speed transmission. Was this only available on the Type-S trim level? Did any of the non Type-S models have a 6 speed, or did they only come with a 5 speed (manual)? Was a standard transmission even optional on any of the 800 2003 Type-S A-Spec models (sold in Canada only)?

2. What are some areas that I should pay special attention to when looking at and test driving 2nd Gen 3.2 TL's? Other then the recall on some of the earlier automatic transmissions, is there any parts I should check closely when inspecting a potential purchase?

ANY information will be very helpful, and greatly appreciated! Feel free to deviate from my specific questions if you feel you have something notable to add! (or even if you just have anything at all to share that could be useful to a potential buyer)

Thank you all in adavance,
CoupedUp

only 3rd gens had the 6 spd manual. 2nd gens with them are swapped. 99's came with 4 speed tiptronic transmission and 00+'s came with 5 speed tiptronic. generally the 99's transmission is more reliable, but the five speed gives a bit more acceleration/fuel economy. TL is a great car

So does that mean 2nd gen did not have a standard transmission at all?

thats correct- but the tiptronic or SS mode is faster than shifting a stick if you want to play.
All TLs at least thru 06 have the same transmission problem-
not the recall which was a simple addition of an external part, but actual failure of the 2nd and 3rd gear clutches
Have to check the warranty carefully on any TL-
call acura with the VIn of any one you really like 1-800-382-2238x5
ask for the history on the car and existing recalls or extended warranty
I what I hear is true- the gen3 or 04+ cars only have 50k miles trans warranty
if so- BUY a plan that goes to at least 100k miles

Thank you everyone for your help thus far.

My next question would be, what standard transmissions could be used for a conversion on the 2nd gen TL? And, if possible, what would be an estimated cost for all the parts required to do the swap (excluding labour)?

This would be a major undertaking, but not impossible. Others have documented their experiences with doing the conversion. I'm sure that you'll find threads with general info on the parts needed. Costs could vary considerably, depending on your sources. Labor in itself, would undoubtebly end up costing far more than the parts, if you were unable to perform the work involved yourself. But if you have your mind deadset towards a 2nd gen TL and are willing to muscle through this swap, the best bet would be to get a exceptionally nice TL with a "bad" tranny. Doing so will considerably lower your initial costs and perhaps maybe even offset the price of conversion parts needed. Go for it !

see the gen2 DIY for the swap info- a CL-s 6 speed will work with about 3 grand worth of parts, and some have installed the entire CLs motor and trans together, plus all the computer and wiring changes, thats a job for someone who is well past warranty and been thru 5 automatics-

Thank you again everyone!

A CL is out of the question at this point, as I have a baby on the way very soon, I would rather a 4 door.

Labour would not be an issue, as I (along with some friends help) could do the work ourselves. I will search for, and check out the DIY threads on the tranny swap.

Finally, 03aspec, you are absolutely right. Now that I know this information, my search will continue to find a A-Spec. Im now kicking myself in the a** that I didnt jump on the last one I seen for sale locally at the Toyota dealership... It was mint '03 A-Spec with 53,000 kms and was selling for $16,500 CAN. Its looking now like I might have to go to Toronto (13-14 hour drive) to get an A-Spec...

Yes, it was a really good deal... Its just too bad that the timing was not right for me. Im not looking to purchase the car untill mid-end June or first of July.

BTW, prices in western Canada are higher then central, that is why I will probably go to Ontario as the best prices seem to be there...
