Question Replacing OEM tires

I am replacing the stock Michelin tires on my 2001 TL. Crappy performance, but quiet. Anyone have any recommendations? I want to stick to the stock size, but need better performance with a quiet ride. Suggestions?

You can get 225/55/16 tires to have better performance since it's wider and Yokohama AVS dB tires for quietness. Tire Rack has them for $101 per tire at that size.

I highly recommend Dunlop SP9000's, but I have those on my 17" Type-S rims, not sure if the right size is available for stock 16" rim. This tire is the best wet performance tire I've ever had, and dry perfomrance on the TL is great. Unfortunately, the cost is pretty up there.

On my stock rims, I have a set of tires I run if I need all weather tires. Dayton HR's in size 225/55-16 on stock rims have great performance (wet and dry), especially for the buck (I think mine were like $80 each) but a little noisier than my SP9000's.

If you are looking for more of a performance tire, check the Bridgestone RE-950. It's an excellent tire - read the reviews at Tire Rack. I had them my GTP. If you want to trade a little performance for a more all season type tire, check the Bridgstone Turanza LS-H. These are new from Bridgestone and are also garnering good reviews. They come in our stock size 205-16. For the RE-950, you would need to goto the 225-55. The RE-950 has a firm, but well controlled ride and is very quiet over coarse pavement. I can't speak to the Turanza, but Bridgestone has been turning out execellent tires and I have no reason to believe the LS-H give you nothing but a smooth and very quiet ride.

I have the Bridgestone Potenza RE950 on my 99TL in 225/55-16 and they are great! They grip very well on both dry and wet pavement and they are not noisy at all. very good tire!

yu888,

how much did the sp9000's set you back? I'd like to either get them or the Potenza S03 PP's.

I'm happy with my Dunlops, and they do come in the correct size for your 16" rims. They are a bit costly, but provide excellent dry and wet performance. I also looked at the Michelin Sport A/S for my stock 16" rims before deciding to upgrade to 17s, they have good treadwear and excellent dry/wet performance.

Can I go to a 225/55/16 tire on stock rims (2001 TL) without any adjustments on the car? Will it affect my speedometer? How wide are the stock TL rims?

Of course you can.

225/55/16 = 25.77
205/60/16 = 25.68 (STOCK)

When your going at 60mph, your speedo will show 59.9mph. Not much difference. Good fit.

What you want doesn't exist. You need a less than ultra high performance all-season tire to get GOOD snow traction. The tread design as well as the rubber compounds for ultra high performance just doesn't lend itself to snow traction. If you want passable snow performance, try the Bridgestone RE-950. It's a uni-directional high performance "all-season". Excellent dry and wet performance and it won't strand you in the snow like some other high performance uni-directional tires. A really good compromise. Bridgestone will also let you drive them for 30 days, although I don't know anyone who has taken them back for a refund. These tires are a significant upgrade over the stock Michelins
