replacing the 99 4spd with a newer 5 spd

I have a black 99 TL. I bought it at 80k miles and i noticed that sometimes when i coast to a redlight, the tranny flips back in fourth between some gear and gives the car a slight jerking sensation. Does this mean its about to die? And if so, could the old tranny be replaced by a newer 5 speed tranny? I am going to purchase a powertrain warranty just incase the worst happens. Let me know fellaz!

I seriously dont think it's just the tranny..... earlier 99TLs are pretty much based on Accord V6, from the engine to tranny.... alot more similiar to Accord.... then in 2000, they re-do the intake manifod, re-do the tranny, and re-do the electronic, and many more stuff..... Yes, LOTS LOTS of stuff are same 99-03, but when it comes to tranny, the majority mechanical parts are different, and i think you need the 5spd ECU to go along with it as well.... so with all those money, i would trade it in, and get a 2000+.......

Yes, dont get me wrong, it can be done of course, but with the money, and time, does it worth it? thats your call!

BTW, my mom's 99. the tranny due to die pretty soon... so the tranny problems not just on 5spd, but 4spd as well.... cuz the way she drives, slower, no racing, no aggressive, no SS mode.... so Acura put some ford tranny on our cars?

I drive a 99 and the tranny on the 2003 loaner was a lot better than my cars transmission. The shifts were very smooth and the response the tranny gave was a lot better. The TL is a heavy car and the engine with the 99 tranny feels it

I still like my 4 speed sorry guys I have to back up the 4 speed every time I see a discrssion about it!! 2nd gear is WHOOOAAAAAAAA!!! a 4 speed could be swapped with 5 speed pretty easily I believe but it's all about the $$$$$$
If mine blows I wanna send mine to Level 10 and they say they can harden the tranny to take 500+ HP!!
I'll just rag it until then!

well you would need the tranny, new gauges, new gate shifter, and new ECU at the bare minimum. if the tranny dies you MIGHT be able to convince the dealer to pay for the 5speed tranny if u buy all the other parts thru them and have them do the work, but thats iffy at best. in the end its gonna cost alot. believe me ive wondered the samething

GREAT...another 99 4-speed defender like myself. I love my 4-speed and to me it feels really fast. Every gear on the 99 is great. At least we can control the 1st to 2nd gear.:p

You guys are making me sad about my crap holder... LOL it's like a pit... nothing fits in it... NOTHING! ok , ok a couple things fit in it but yes it sucks ass.
Would I trade a cup holder and better gas mileage for an extra gear? No.
LOL when I bought the car the owner thought it was a 5 speed!!! I told him it was a 4 speed but he didn't listen so I dropped it!
ROFLOL!!
