repainting worth the trouble?

hello all...

what is involved in repainting a TL ... for example, do they remove all the glass?

is it worth repainting if it is not necessary? i heard that the original oven baked paint job can not be duplicated outside the factory...

thanks

From: Miami - just one day, I would like to drive without getting cut off!
I have an 02' ABP TL-S that was vandalized and thus scratched down to the metal. All four quarterpanels and the hood and trunk were repainted in the shop. My car looked like new when it was finished. It took about 10 days though. Oh yeah and it cost $1800! :wow:
Flake paint -- looks great, cost a fortune.

A good shops' paint job can be even better looking than factory. But it will take a while, and will cost you some serious $$$$, half of the car will have to be taken apart.

So don't do it unless you have to. Easier to trade your car in for a different color.

thanks strannik...

my tl has dust lumps in the paint...couple of mechanics have said it's normal.

the dealer and manufaacturer, however, have offered to repaint my car under warranty...great service offer, but is it worth it? any risk to NOT repainting?

thanks

take them up on it. By all means if they are going to foot the bill. Your car will be the pimpness again!!! It 's like adding newness! After you get it painted you have to get the new car scent tree and hang it in your rearview for a while!!!

thanks guys...but won't a repaint affect the resale value, even if the repaint is ONLY to bring the paint up to factory specs (and not to cover up body work from an accident)...

assuming the dust your talking about isnt too noticeable, i wouldnt re paint it

i personally believe that paint from the factory is the best, and even the best body shops cant/wont match it. if your picky enough to notice the odd imperfection, then youll see a ton of imperfections with a completely re painted car

(just my experience with body work)

thanks mr tl...

warranty people said that they would sand the paint and respray...but they would keep the "base" coat...comments?

some of the dust lumps are literally bumpy lumps...there's just a few but acura offered to repaint the whole car...great service, but why such a generous offer?

Re-painting the whole car takes lots effort & $$.

If I would do the complete paint job on the car, we have to take out all the necessary parts out of the car in order to sand(normaly all the way to the bare sheet metal). Moreover, there are lots of parts that need to be replaced after moved from the car because it can't be re-used.
If you're going to change the base color, that mean we have to shoot the engine bay & door jam, stuff. So it has to be bare case(just structure of the car, less than engine & trans). However, you can always leave the door jams & engine bay, but it'll look really weird if those are different color as exterior.

There are several different ways to do the complete paint job, not like Macco's which will takes about an week to complete, but the fact is You'll get what you pay for!!!.

I used to inspect cars for an insurance company and I've worked with body shops alot. Here is my opinion from my experience. Keep the original/factory paint as long as you can. The factory paint will last the longest because it was literally baked on at the factory. Most body shops just use heat lamps and it is not the same.

For a really nice paint job, it will cost about $3000-$4000. Alot of labor is involved in removing and reinstalling factory parts.
