If you plan on keeping the car for a while, invest in a good aftermarket alarm with a remote start option (I highly recommend anything in the Clifford--now DEI--line). You'll get the added protection of the alarm and possibly an insurance discount, and doing them at the same time is the cheapest way to go. If you plan on selling it or its a lease, Avatal and DEI make standalone units that are pretty good.

friend got the dealer installed one, it was $600 bucks I think (at time of new car purchase)

At Best Buy, they do the same thing $180 installed.

can we get a remote starter without changing the alarm? Don't we also have to get another key made that has the chip inside to trick the immobilizer. I hear they destroy the key but leave the chip part to hhok it up to the remote starter.

Yes, it's true. Cause the immobilizer won't let you start the car if you don't have the chip for it to see right? That's not that much of a biggie. I'm going to do a whole custom alarm setup on my TL-S. And I'm going to put all the stuff you can imagine in it. :p But seriously...IMHO, The immobilizer is nothing...all the professional thieves already know how to by-pass that thing so quick. BUT! What I would recommend is....get the chip out of the key...get a new uncut key and have them program it..but don't cut it. Then...get the chip...have it tapped..and also velcro it to the bottom of the dash..so when you leave the car....take it with you! then you car is the way it was...but you can remote start it..haha...defeats the whole purpose.

I have had the Viper 550 Remote Start for a couple of months Now. My car has been broken into twice already. The first time was at my high school with the factory alarm. They broke the rear passenger little window and they couldnt get in from there then they got a crowbar and went for the passenger door handel. They just said screw it and went for a honda accord. 2nd time with viper alarm it was at the dealership getting repaired and they broke the rear passenger window, BAM the alarm goes off as well as them. I have 2 shock sensors on it. Alarm gets alot of WOWS!!! I recommend spending the money now than suffering later trust me . It Sux Big NUTS.. Two thumbs Up

Not all remote start systems have to bypass the immobilizer system completely. When the first remote starts came out and cars started showing up with chipped keys, the only way to make them work was to cut the chip out of the key body and tape it somewhere on the inside of the steering column so that when the car was remote-started, the ignition would "see" the chip, thinking it was in the ignition (when in fact it was just near the ignition). In fact, the ignition *always* saw the key in the ignition because the chip never moved. This setup *did* bypass the immobilizer system and made the car more vulnerable to theft, and some of the real cheap standalone remote car starters still do this (buyer beware!). But newer, more sophisticated alarms are different. The setup with my Clifford has one full chipped key hidden somewhere in the car (even I don't know where) in a box that reads the chip and allows the system to be remotely started. But the immoblilzer circuit is not disabled or disconnected. When the key is put in the ignition to finally drive the car, the original circuitry checks to see if that key is also chipped. If it is not, the ignition is killed. I verified this with a non-chipped key I use in emergencies to get in my car. Works on the doors only but won't start the car.

Are you sure about this? Is this what you have in your car? Is this the same as in the CL's (thats what I got). See, I really want a great alarm system with a remote starter but I dont want to sacrifice the immobilizer function of our cars.

Had a DEI remote starter in my last car ('93 Vigor). They just integrated it with the stock alarm. I was very satisfied with it.

Now that the weather is cold I miss having one.

I had a Viper 550ESP alarm w/ remote start. I loved it! No problems for years (thanks to an awesome installer).
As for the immobilizer, I bought another key from Acura "uncut" programmed. Viper has a device that you stick this key into and store it underneath your dash someplace. I believe this module is only activated through the alarm, so when the alarm is set and somebody breaks in, they can't just start the car with a screwdriver or something.
Just make sure that you have a really good installer! Otherwise, you'll going to be making many trips back.

socal.......do you remember how much Acura charged you for a new key?? I'm in the market for this remote start system but I've never had remote start on a car with immobilizers.

Also....how long did it take the dealer to get it to you? sorry to ask...I'm on a time frame to get everything done to thee car.

Yes, I've got the Clifford Concept 100 system and it does the same thing like socal28 described. I believe the immobilizer system in the TL is the same as the CL (wouldn't make sense to redesign it for a sister car). I wouldn't be too concerned about it, though. Most aftermarket alarms do a pretty good job of disabling the starter/fuel delivery system anyway if the alarm is triggered. The newest Clifford units have a *wireless* relay hidden in the car that is tied into the starter system. When you arm the car, the relay kicks out and the starter is disabled. Because the unit is wireless, it can be hidden anywhere in the car and the thief can't go tracing wires from the alarm brain to bypass the relay. When you disarm the car, the alarm sends a signal to the relay kicks in and transmits the signal to the starter to start. Very cool.

DEI kept all the names in the various product lines. So the Clifford stuff is still branded as Clifford. Go to www.clifford.com and you can see their current product line.
