Rear View Mirror Spot

As of this morning, I have a clear spot at the top of my rear view mirror & I don't know what caused it. Does that mean the mirror needs to be replaced? Where should I go to get the mirror replaced?

Has this ever happened to your mirror? I read in another post that it can explode, mostly on the inside of the mirror & the dimming doesn't work anymore & gets stuck in its position. I will have to get one fro Acura before it gets worse.

the spots are bad news,,may be days weeks or years before it explodes,,but that day sucks!

spend the 80 bucks with one of our dealer sponsors- ck threads in `sponsored sales` area

retail is 140 so they cut us a good break

of course its not a normal type mirror install--its the TL!

Try junkyard for another one. I don't know if the company that made them are still offering replacements or not, but most likely not. Read about this years ago and my solution was to simply turn off the auto dim since I found that function pointless with tinted windows.

Mine has a big oval shape in the middle I took it off and it's been sitting in the trunk for over 2 months in Arizona weather and have been without a rear view mirror for those 2 months, I just got used to it.

Either way thanks to your thread I took the time to look online for one and will be ordering it soon I'll leave the link,

I have some ZipLoc bags over it right now. It looks so ghetto I'll probably order this http://www.oemacuraparts.com/oem-par...6400-sep-a02za & try to see if I can carefully take off the f*cked up one before the liquid starts dripping & I'm going to try to not make a whole in my windshield.

do NOT buy used mirror!!
the maker was giving exchanges until a few years ago- but many didnt return the original and sold it onliine!
leaking at all!

its possible to remove the outer mirror layer and the stuff - but I would be very very careful about that

Then where's the best place to get a NEW one? Most of the websites I found don't say if it's new or used. I've tried searching in the Vendors, but how do I know if their products are new.

I recently replaced my mirror, the best price I could find was from one of our sponsors, Acura Parts Source. It was $88.00 delivered.

I guess the best thing to do is get it from Acura. Maybe I can convince them it's a safety hazard & get a discount.

So I just called Acura & asked them how much for the mirror & installation. $110 for the mirror & $140 for the installation!!! Are you kidding me?!? $250 total!! I'm thinking about just getting a manual mirror instead. Is that possible to do? I was just thinking about throwing the mirror & wires away & get a manual to stick up there because I don't need an auto dimming mirror, the manual ones are just fine. Should I look for a particular manual mirror or can I just get any kind? No explosion yet, probably because it hasn't been warm over here in VA.

look in the sponsored sales section for dealers who hook us up
there are mirror threads there
20 bucks gets it installed at most auto glass shops
MOST dealers do not touch glass--they have the glass shop come, and then overcharge you !
If they do it themself- there is a 1 hour minimum labor charge!! for a max 20 minute diy
the diy is fairly simple if followed

dealers will always have the new version, its been a few years now since the change.
old and new have the power light on opposite side

you can get a plain mirror and glue on the small part that holds it to the glass
BUT
still have to be very careful not to break the glass during old removal
thats when it happens- there is a hidden lock...try to wiggle mirror off mount..
.SNAP goes a chunk of glass

good news is the glass shop will install the new mirror on the new windshield at no extra charge~
hope you had low deduct on glass damage!!

The link you posted was for a NEW mirror. Its a dealer. Or you can get it from here

http://www.acuraautomotiveparts.org/...catdisplay.jsp

Dont pay to have it installed. It slides on and off with some pressure and the wires simply unplug.

I would like to take it off myself, but I don't wanna risk it. I'm having a pro take it off & just putting a universal manual mirror in place of it from AutoZone. Saves me $200.

I was going to recommend a full time rear "back-up" camera, like on some of the newer cars !

Yes? No? Good? Bad? I'm going to a glass shop & have then carefully take off the old one. I could put the new one on easy if they leave the holster still attached to the windshield.

I'm thinking about replacing my mirror after reading the suggestions, but I wanted to let you know that one day about three years ago, I noticed a spot (acutally a horizontal section) at the top of my mirror like what you described. I have no idea why/when or how it happened, but three years later, it still looks the same and it has not exploded!

Nope, but I still had someone else take it off.

Once ya get yer confidence built up and git past the initial "first steps", It'll all start to make more sense to try it yourself.....rather than pay someone else big $ that you could use on the next mods or future repairs.

Nothing really to be afraid of....get a service manual for your TL, read up and save $............!!!!!!. We would'nt steer ya wrong, huh ?

Didn't cost me a penny. $90 for the mirror, so $90 for the total install.

most glass shops will do it for 20 bucks, if you drive to them

if the instructions in the diy are followed exactly- its not that bad a job,,20 minutes
but
if you are the type that must throw away any directions and go for it on the
`must be like my old car` MAY result in fatal glass damage

the locking clip is the key--literally--to releasing the old mirror

IIRC, The instructions on releasing the locking clip in the otherwise excellent DIY was not very clear on exactly where/what to press and how to release it.

If that part gives anyone trouble, just study the mounting area on the new mirror before you put it on, compare that to what you see on the old mounted mirror after you have removed the little cover piece. By looking at both of them, you can figure out what needs pressing & where & how.

I did have to tap my new mirror a little harder than I wanted to drive it down into lock, but nothing broke.

That's true, but I didn't want to risk it. The glass shop got it off in a matter of minutes & didn't charge me at all, so I got lucky. Now all I need is an alignment, but I can't do that myself.

Me too. I just used a rubber mallet to lock it in place.

looking at the new mirror helps you understand the lock part
and use a dental pick to release it
