Auto Dim Mirror Fail

Ok well ever since i got the car the mirror has been looking like this, with auto dim on or off it stays the same idk whats going on. Really looks ugly imo, i was just going to buy a broadway mirror but i read on the forum that someone's auto dim mirror exploded and ruined the seats and center console, i deff dont want that happening to me. Any tips or help to fix this thing?

Whole mirror is yellow except for a clear blob

Yea if that stuff leaks, it will eat through anything. The mirrors were poorly designed.

I believe the 03 TL had a different rear view mirror. You could try that or go aftermarket. If that blob ever starts moving, I would plastic bag the mirror and replace it immediately.

Mine has the same thing, except it's blue instead of yellow. The blob has been in the middle for a couple years now. Don't know what mirror to replace it with.

get a brand new one from the NEW MAKER do not buy used ebay--many old units find their way there,,
see our sponsoring dealers for a discount ~80 bucks
retail $140!!
diy install or 20 bucks at a glass shop to save you breaking it

put a ziplock aorund it for this week,, tape up excess etc
mine had the oval- color around it seems really close to the exploding point--my opinion

The old ones were liquid filled which we see are particularly harmful when they leak. The new ones are lcd and are far more reliable and safer.

a good ziplock- not some flimsy brand, `may` contain the stuff

hasnt been tested in actual failure- but certainly makes the wife feel better about it until replaced!!

dont you have a right outside mirror? easy to set them and never have look in the interior mirror--
just like driving a truck!,
or an Italian sportscar,,,~whatsa behind a-me is no importante~

Tim from oemacuraparts.com posted a deal on replacement mirrors a while ago over on mdxers.org. Here's the link he posted - not sure if he's still got any at this price but it won't hurt to check.

thanks for the link, i read on the other thread about the mirrors, i emailed magna donleey or w.e their name is to see if i can get anything, ill call up to acura client services to see if i can get a free replacement and if those dont work ill just buy one from acura and let them install it, hopefully same price 70 for mirror and 20 for install. but for now ill just take my mirror off

2> swap the mirror mount...so the new mirror has the old mount..
3> take it to a window shop....they have some crazy mofo glue which sticks this shit....

Let us know how it went.....

there is no missing piece....when you put the base of the old mirror onto the new mirror the glass people/shop will stick it....and it will take care of everything....if all else fails you will have to buy a new windshield....go to a glass shop and show them everything...

You should be able to get the metal piece out of the old mirror - it should slide off with a little force. Take the metal piece with the glass stuck to it to a glass shop and ask them if they can glue it back in place on the windshield. If they can I can't imagine it would be more than $10-$20 - a friendly place who wants your future business may even do it for free.

Don't know if you saw this thread from the 2gen DIY page but it may help you figure out how to get the metal piece off: https://acurazine.com/forums/2g-tl-1999-2003-98/replacing-tl-rear-view-mirror-619196/

guessing you missed the diy on how to release the lock arm inside the clip

acura corp has no reason to replace these free, a few did get warranty years ago, then magna took over exchanges till a year ago or so- when a new maker took over everything

magna no longer has anything to do with these mirrors-

ask one of our sponsoring dealers for the special ziner price
tim at oemacura,,he moved jobs last year- still selling parts, ck sponsors list for him

the guy at a neighborhood glass shop did this for free for my friends 97 RL....all he had to do was put some glue on the old mirror and stick it to the glass....I would say $20 tops is what you should pay.....

I have no idea how much the new mirror will cost ya....

once you break glass like that it is unsafe
you have seen the commercials on tv- it happens- hit a bump and the weak point is going to give way

anytime its happened and reported here- the solution was new glass

at least its easy to install the new mirror on new glass!
the correct one will come with the glass side bracket already attached,
mirror slides in and locks

ill take the metal tab off and try to go get it glued back on but to me itll be a safety hazard.. like 01tl4tl said, if i hit a bump itll give away at the weak point, and houston has ALOT of bumpy roads, i dont wanna drive and then CRACK big ass line in the middle. I still dont know how to take the metal button off.. ill just pry it off i guess, ive been looking at the thing for 30 mins and seems like 2 metal pins on the side are holding it down

STOP!!!! your efforts without guidance havnt been going so well~

master diy list here: https://acurazine.com/forums/2g-tl-1999-2003-98/new-official-2nd-gen-tl-diy-thread-706083/

read the mirror install diy = with pics of how to remove the clip from its holder

there is a hidden lock you release with a very thin small screwdriver
then it will slide apart!

No amount of prying will override that... without destruction of the mount, and shards of glass in your hand

but its your choice

tOny3,

Don't be surprised if they say you need a new windshield. Unfortunately, by messing with the mirror, the piece that came off from the windshield created a weakest spot from which stress fractures or cracks will start. The glass (attached to tab) separated from the rest of the windshield at the laminate which is sandwiched in-between the layers.

In today's cars, the front and rear glass are a structural part of the design AND purposefully installed under a LOT of stress. You are correct: a weakened windshield is a safety hazard! I don't believe any type of "super glue" can resolve this weakness.

most insurances will cover windshield replacement if something happened to it by accident...dont know if this counts but just throwing it out there....

if you take it to a glass shop, they work with you= meaning they tell insurance it is cracked larger than a quater and not repairable
you pay the deduct,,its not going to jack your rates- comprehensive covers this, be it from the neighbors weedeater threw a rock at your parked car,,(guess who-right after the car was washed and waxed)
the key is whats your deduct--100 bucks? 200? use it
more than that and you will do better with cash at glass shop
make a few calls, ask for cash price

UPDATE!!!

I said to myself i wasnt gonna let the auto dim mirror win so i went out to the garage and went to work. I eventually won in the end. I figured i didnt need the 'auto dim' feature so i said fuck it, took the mirror apart, got the the glass peices, looked at it and thought for about 10 minutes to what i was gonna do, everything i did to try to seperate the glass peices didnt work so i just cracked the front clear lens. Out came the liquid and off came the peices, brand new mirror appeared no need to buy a new mirror, i was gonna put a broadway mirror on anyways so it doesnt matter.

Gonna use a clear lexan peice infront of the mirror so it fills the gaps, they're about the same width so it works out.

GOOD AS NEW
