Rear Spoiler ideas

So the paint on my current trunk and OEM spoiler is ruined. It's covered in little white dots that are etched into the paint all the way down to the primer. I tried wetsanded first with 1000 -> 1500 -> 2000 but most of the marks are still there.

I decided to just repaint the trunk and spoiler so I sanded them down with 600 grit. But I've always wanted to custom mold a spoiler into the trunk lid. I don't know what to do though. I have been practicing my sanding, bondo, and painting skills a lot lately and I think I am ready to take on a larger project.

Should I:

Option 1. Repaint trunk/spoiler and leave OEM spoiler untouched.

Option 2. CSL style spoiler custom molded in. Seen it done on 3Gs. Not sure how it would look on a 2G. But it would not be difficult to do. This would eliminate the OEM spoiler. The LED bar from the spoiler would be retrofitted to the rear deck behind the rear seats.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/07-10-BMW-E9...ht_3708wt_1396

Option 3. Cut OEM spoiler on both sides of the trunk (so the trunk can still open), mold in the two end pieces into the rear fender (would require a ton of work and respray of the trunk and rear fenders). The end result (well, the goal) should look similar to the NSX rear fenders and spoiler. All very smooth. Or if anyone can think of a way to get a trunk open without have to cut the OEM spoiler apart give me some suggestions. This option is incredibly difficult.

as opposed to the gap:

I also should mention that this is a relatively low budget project. I want to get this done for less than $200, which I think is possible given I already have an OEM spoiler, and free access to a spray gun and a compressor. I would love to mold in a Mugen replica spoiler but the thing is just too damn expensive.

Any other ideas?

In order for the last option to look right you would have to make it a 3 piece and mold the outer 2 pieces to the body. Ending it on the trunk wouldnt look right.

That's what I meant, sorry if it wasn't clear. I would take the outer two pieces and mold them to the rear fenders. It would function the same way as the NSX does.

Looking at the TL and the NSX i deff think you can pull off both the CSL and NSX trunk combined. Mold the sides of the spoiler into the panels and create a CSL with the l.e.d bar from the spoiler. Just an idea. I can see it in my head but cant really draw it out lol. Maybe if i tried

the more i think about it, the NSX style spoiler probably would not look right with the body lines of the TL. can anyone photoshop the NSX style spoiler and the CSL style spoiler on a 2G?

To be honest with you, I really don't think an NSX style spoiler will look great even if done correctly. I believe that a CSL style trunk will look very good though, one of my favorites is the WingsWest along with the Mugen, if you can some how make something from the two and put it to be a CSL, that'd be absolute money.

^ I see what you're saying. Let's see what I can come up with.

In the mean time, here's another idea. Let me know what you guys think. It's just the OEM spoiler moved further back.

Mustang spoiler will be look good on 2g too. Not over the top just right size to our ride. I was thinking about doing that one too but opted to mugen.

I would love to see csl spoiler on 2g if you can make it happen. If you going that root then it won't need to upload my progress pics in your thread but you can always pm me about it if you want me to. I'm doing other body parts right now when it complete I will post all result at one time.

You guys making me wanted to custom my WW rear spoiler an my it look like Mugen Style
I didn't use any spoiler at all and materials I used are polystyrene foam from salmon fish box cut in shape wrapped in fiber glass, carbon fiber, epoxy resin and bondo filler for middle large piece.
For two small pieces, I used drywall compound fast set lite 20 from home depot for base shape and wrapped as middle large piece.
any way I will post some pics here.

so one of my engineering buddies is working on a carbon fiber hull for his Solar Boat project. once he's done with that he's going to help me skin the whole trunk with real 2x2 CF after i mold the CSL spoiler in. no need for paint when you can just wrap it in carbon fiber!

My polystyrene foam spoiler cooked up in so cal sun and some part became shrink so I have to redo it same method as two small pieces one using drywall compound. Hope next time will be O.K.

ww spoiler is a kind of big, when look from side of car. IMO it won't be look good if you want to do like mugen 3 pieces from that's size so I would leave it as it or unless you don't mind to shave it to smaller then make 2 small pieces like mugen but I have no clue how's product made is solid inside or hole.
To shave smaller, how well you can sand evenly the whole thing is by hand not easy task.

So the spoiler came in a couple days ago. It's going to take A LOT of work to make this work but I think it can be done.

Position 1 (fits "well")

Position 2 (fits "well" also)

And this is where I would like it

I hope I can make this work....

Hm..from what I was thinking, you would need to cut it in half, fill in the middle so you can extend it to be flush with the trunk, and then fill in the rest of the gaps somehow.

the 3rd gen concept had one like that. If molded correctly it would look good on our cars

I may have a body shop look at it and see what they think. Maybe I'll get a price quote from them.
