Post Real Sadness

One might name me a sore loser or a bratt or an idiot, but the fact is that when new stuff comes out like a TLS, how do you guys take it? I feel bad already because don't we deserve some of that action? What rational do you guys have that makes it all ok? Sniff...

I have stopped spending money on my car because the type s is coming out. I'll just waste my money modding a 996 which is coming next year.

Well.... we mainly pissed because we don't get to have a 260HP engine right? Well, just don't try to be a racer. We have four door luxury cars, no one really expects us to race. The TLs we have now are fast enough.... The new facelift, i won't believe it until i see it.... honda/acura just changes the lights and stuff. No biggie, just buy the INSPIRE tails and clear your front lights!! Didn't 2001 TLs just come out?? I doubt the TL-S is really coming out that soon. MAYBE in about a year. If anything, everyone that wants the TL-S, START TRYIN TO SELL YOUR CAR NOW!!! A lot of people would still buy a used TL. Not many non TL owners knows ANYTHING about the "TL-S" And dealers aren't goin to tell their customers a "better" TL is coming out. That would just be plain stupid of them to take their TL sales away.

Don't get me going on this...

We live in the most intensely materialist culture ever seen. Corporations strive to turn each of us into the perfect consumer - never content with what we've got, always wanting "newer", "better", "faster". And we fall for it big time.

I'm OK with wanting nice stuff (and the TL is very nice stuff!). I get crazy about the environment that keeps us from ever being content with the nice stuff we've got.

There's always going to be something newer out there. I refuse to play that f#%^ed-up game.

My TL is a great car, and I plan on enjoying it for many years to come. When the time comes to replace it, I'll be looking for the best car I can afford. Until that time, I've got the best car I can afford.

I fullly agree with black2000, you'll never be able to catch up with the progress. Anything you buy now becomes if not obsolete but old-fashioned in 6 month.
Take anything, for example I bought a PC a year ago with a P3 500MHz processor and now they have P4 1.5GHz...
I bought a SONY MiniDV camcoder 6 month ago and now they came out with a MiniDISC camcoder...
Take anything you want and you'll find this consistency... anything!

My TL is good enough for now... when I have more money to spend, when and hopefully not if, I would buy something that's an instant classic like a BMW M5 or anything they'd have at that time...

If you have money to waste... trade in your 3-6 month old car for a new one which is basically the same.

Black's hitting it on the nose. Yeah, it sucks that the TL-S is coming out and we all own TL's, but just because the TL-S is out there doesn't mean my TL sucks!

My TL is still just as awesome as it was the day before I heard about the TL-S. It didn't become garbage the minute I heard about the TL-S.

Well, it sucks for us recent buyers who really wanted to know if the "new" 2001 models would be improved from the 2000 cars (Type-S, or at least a memory seats option), then bought one of the last 2000 cars when the 2001 cars turned out not to have any changes.

Then six weeks after buying, this word comes out of a March 2001 "early release" of "2002" TLs with exactly the features I was willing to hold out a few months (and pay extra money) for.

I still think I got a great deal on my car, but I don't see why Acura (Honda) couldn't have scheduled things a bit better so that the Type-S could have been part of the 2001 lineup. The way they so carefully said NOTHING about the 2001 changes until they came out in early October makes me think they were trying to get it done that way originally but failed.

They could at least have announced the Type-S version to be "coming in six months" in October. Not everybody buying a TL wants a Type-S (after all they sell CL's and Type-S CL's side by side). And anybody who waited to buy a Type-S over the base TL would probably be paying sticker price (or more if they were among the first to buy them), which gets their dealers more money too.

thats exactly the reason they dont tell you about a new TL-s because if people knew about it they would wait to make a purchase untill the new car comes out. this way we go ahead and do what we did... buy the current car and then be wanting the new TL-S that way there is a possibility that some of us will buy 2 cars instead of 1 car. can you imagine how sales might drop if they said that there would be a new version of the car comming out? people would walk out of the dealer and possibly be lost to the competition if the competition comes out with somthing better in the meantime. then acura has no sale instead of at least 1 and possibly 2 sales per customer.

If I'm going to be a sore loser, it's because yesterday I saw at the dealer that they had 2000 RLs on sale for $33,000. I would've bought one of those instead of the TL I bought a month ago.

However, my TL has more than pleased me, and I got my '01 the month the '01 models came out, so that will help with the resale value should I decide to unload the car.

If anything, after I find a new job that hopefully pays a good bit more than my old one, I will buy a used BMW, perhaps a 540i, 740i or 740il. (dreaming here) Check the prices out at www.texas-cars.com to see what I'm talking about!

...and think how the owners of the '98 TL felt when the '99 came out - cheaper, better, faster. The new model pretty much killed their resale. same for the Supra Turbo owners when Toyota reduced the MSRP by $10,000 the last year or so that the car was out.

Or, even worse, pity the '99 TL guys who had to endure that pain of the next year's models that had better low-end torque and a 5-speed tranny.

Yes, there's always something newer and better that's right around the corner. Not good for buyer's remorse, but great for the general buying public. Sheesh, just be glad it's not the 70s when the OPEC crisis hit, and even the Corvette sucked *ss!

Sorry, Grishulia - I assume you're taking a bath w/ the market as it is.

I was referring more to the sad state of automotive engineering of the 70s in my post. Cars get better and better each year, but that's expected. When guys say, "they don't make 'em like they used to" I just grin and am happy it's true.

As for the market, well - just try to pick up some bargains and not turn your paper losses into actual money lost. Have a look at BRCM, which I believe will rebound and double within a year. I liked it in Feb, and it shortly doubled. They'll be back. Lucent is also undervalued right now, and SOFN is dirt-cheap and shows promise, although it is dangerous and carries a high beta.

Good luck!

(P.S. Grishulia, what do you do up in NYC? Your posts have always amused me, and you kind of remind me of myself for whatever that's worth.)

No not selling yet but it hurts my eyes to look at it...
BRCM... nice... I think I'll talk to my broker about it, I was thinking about buying something anyway for a writeoff...
As far as Lucent I have it in few of my funds...
And SOFN... they are loosing their pants... I doubt I'll invest any money in them but might just get maybe a $1000 worth it... maybe...
What do I do in NYC...as far as work I'm a consultant working with data warehouses and application development... otherwise just enjoying life...

I, for, one am REALLY hapy with my 99 TL despite and improvement on the '00 5 speed and torque. AND I am even happy that the new TL's will be improved again b/c if they don't keep 'em coming better and better, Nissan and Toyota (and their related "lux lines" ) will be breathing down Honda/Acura's neck.

I am hoping that some of the up[grades will be compatible tho. I think mid- stream facelifts for Honda has always been: Slight mod on grill and lights. Upgrade to digital system to include mem seats is good call even tho i wish I had it...its ok, its still mostly only me that drives the car.

But in 03 when if.when a 6speed manual comes out, I may reconsider =).

I love my TL and have spent hours working on electrical mods. Im holding off on performance mods for later. To all current owners, here are a few points to keep in mind.

1. We don't know what it will look like!
If its just bumpers and lights, 1000 bucks or so will make them identical.

2. If comptech makes that supercharger, the 35 extra horsepower from TL-S breathing won't stand a chance against TL with supercharger, headers and exhaust. Well be over 300.

3. Seats might be nicer but what will the Type S lose from the regular TL. Usually the sport isn't as luxurious as the regular sedan. Personally I like my heated seats and crome metal door handles, wood steering wheel and trim etc.

4. It's probably a year away from now, 2001 just came out.

Say... someone here was saying I could get a custom supercharger today for $10,000... that's less than how much I'd lose by trading in for a TL-S

I dunno from what company. I spoke to Jackson Racing a few months ago and they wanted about 100,000 and a purchase order for 2000 units.
