Radio Swap

Just a quick question for the community. I gave my son as a college present my old 00 Acura TL. Since then the radio still works but the CD sometimes play. (you have to eject it and insert a couple of time). This is the stock single disc CD unit. Will a radio from a 01 TL w/ 6 disc work? Are there any extra wires / plugs a 6 disc has that a single disc doesn't have? Thanks in advance guys!

I think the 6-disc units were only in the 2002 and 2003 model years, and it's a direct plug-and-play replacement.

I think you're right but can I replace a 00 radio with an 02-03 radio? Will that also be a direct PnP?

Yes, the 1999-2001 TL came with a single disc player while the 2002-2003 TL came with a 6-disc changer.

It is a Plug-N-Play replacement but I have seen conflicting reports on whether or not there are navi and non-navi versions of the radio. Search the forums for more on that.

I installed the 6-disc model in my 1999 Acura and it works great.

Be sure not to buy an Acura CL radio as those are not interchangeable, even though they look identical.

Here's a great link on how to replace the radio:

Of course, another option is to buy an aftermarket head unit. Many forms members have been happy with that choice.

Thanks Bob! I knew about the radios NOT being interchangeable on the CLs. So basically, i will just need to research or find out whether or not the donor radio was part of a TL that had NAVI or not. Mine currently does not so if this new radio didn't have NAVI, it should work out for me as it did you... right?

I was also considering the aftermarket path as well but I would lose the functionality of the subwoofers. Someone mentioned in a previous post that I would have to get a "Metro" kit; Not sure what that's all about or entails.

Here's a thread discussing the navi and non-navi radio differences:

I basically asked the same question a little over a year ago.

If you are planning on adding subwoofers, I'd recommend that you get an aftermarket unit. There are a lot of great units out there that will probably run you about the same (if not cheaper) than the stock unit. Then, you might run into the problem of the OEM replacement stopping reading CDs just like the one you have is doing now.

Another option is to get the Blitz (I believe it is that brand) iPod adapter. It plugs right into the back of the stock head unit to where the 6 disc changer would normally plug in and plays the music from the iPod through the car stereo. These are a lot better as they are direct line audio where the RF transmitters will give you static and won't play as clear as direct line.

Or you can just hook up a battery line to your battery, and a LOC (or line out converter) to your sub outs like what i did. Some people like the stock deck, so they'd rather keep it. I'm running a Rockford bd1000a1 with an eclipse 9200 subwoofer through the line out converter and it sounds great.

Did you use the adjustable LOC from PAC to do this? If so, where did you hook up the LOC? right from the rear deck speakers or at the amp (outbound to the the speakers)?
