Radar Detector - Solo S2

Has anyone purchased the Escort Solo S2. I was looking into getting 1 because it is upgradable and it's suppose to be like the 8500. I have a power cord which I would connect. I don't trust the batteries.

Let me know how you like it? I heard the screen might be a bit hard to read at some points.

If you are going to use a power cord then why not buy the 8500? Check www.radartest.com. They have review it I think.

Chet is right. I have owned the first two generations of Solo and have generally been pleased with them. I have never used the power cord but then I am only a casual speeder. Passport claims that on the Solo-2 using the batteries does not significantly decrease the range. When you get one please give some feedback, I have been considering the Solo-2 myself.

I spoke to an Escort rep about this.

I was told that the Solo is comparable to 8500, but the 8500 is still a smidge better as far as range. Now my 8500 has caught cops at close to two miles away, so even if the Solo needed a little less than that, it should be sufficient.

I agree though, if you're going to use a cord, why not just go with the 8500, last I checked, I think the Solo costs more than the 8500.

The reason for the Solo was because its upgradeable. Similar to the V1. So all I have to do is buy 1 detector and it will last me more than a yr or 2 before the cops come up with a different tech. Or else I will get the 8500.

How do they upgrade it?

Do you have to send it back to Escort and they upgrade the microprocessor or do they give you a new upgraded one. How much for a upgrade..

The need hasn't arisen yet for an upgrade (i.e. new RADAR frequency), at least that's what I was told from Escort.

The microprocesser can be "flash programmed", and I would assume that you would need to send it in to do it. Last I heard Valentine charges around $100 for theirs, since the 8500 is relatively new (only a couple years old), and there hasn't been a need for an update, I don't think Escort has set a price yet.
