Talking Racing ? - how about a Prelude?

Hey I need some advice! There's this kid at my school who has a new generation Prelude with i/e, but stock rims and tires- can my 03' TLS beat him ? I am getting intake put in before we will probably have a chance to race... i didnt get exhaust yet because it is pretty expensive and produces minimal gains because our stock exhaust is already pretty decent. my recent kills have been a GTP grand prix, non-turbo eclipse, a mildly modded civic lx, passat etc. What do you guys think my chances are? This kid is talking smack.... so I wanted to set him straight! Its a stick BTW... your thoughts on this would be appreciated!

It will be close but you should win slightly even if he shifts correctly.

Since you mentioned that he has stock wheels and tires, how much of an effect will having larger wheels have? If stock is 16's and he puts on 18's, how much of a disadvantage is he putting himself into? Is it almost negligible?

i've beaten a friend's prelude over and over ... he had aem intake, Tanabe exhaust, DC sport headers , Vafc...pretty basic stuff but he couldn't beat me... he now has a greddy turbo and he can smoke me in second gear all the way to finish line

plus-sizing your wheels will (usually) mean increased weight. increased unsprung weight is a big for racing. will definitely slow you down, of course dependent on how much heavier the wheels are.

say you go from stock 16in. aluminum to 18in. chrome, there will be a greatly noticeable difference.

comes down to "bling-bling" vs. speed

Stock Prelude = Qualude

Mod one out, however and watch out TL-S...

Prelude = Qualude--Haven't heard of that in awhile!

You should win, but beware of what may lurk beneath...I'd suggest a little peak under the 'ol hood first (and you don't need the intake, either)...

Good luck, be careful, and don't shame us...

I absolutely KILLED a Prelude last year, he even had a slight head start on me, and we were going up a hill. I usually don't race, but the guy was was asking for it. (speeding up to prevent me from changing lanes = asking for it)

You should have no probs, unless there's some sort of surprise under his hood.

Thanks for all the help guys!- I can't wait to get my intake putin. i heard the VTEC sound just screams! Yeah- get this- another kid at my school put a exhaust/ rims on his outback wagon and he thinks he can run... haha He always revs when he rolls by me... It's pretty funny actually. I hate when people rice out their cars, but nothing under the hood- all show no go....

Outback Wagon?!? That's funny.

A 5G Lude, huh?? A TL-S should edge out a 5th Gen Lude, provided the Lude driver is less than perfect. If he had a 4G Lude VTEC, it would be a definite tossup!!

As a previous prelude owner, I believe that the '94 on up prelude's had a "v-tec" model (190 hp and 5 spd. only) and an "Si" (160 hp and auto or 5spd.) after the '97 model change however EVERY single Prelude had the H22a1 which was good for 195 hp w/ either a 5spd. manual or auto. Most prelude's were ordered w/ the auto.
Now, the Type SH came only with the 5 Spd. and "Active Torque Transfer System" which helped pull the car around really tight curves with minimal understeer.

Either way u should win cause if he's got the auto, the engine's too low on torque to pull hard, or if he's got the manual he's gonna have to drop the revs high and feater it to just keep up with u.

Good luck and show him what a VTEC V-6 can do!

Sorry forgot to mention that the '97 auto only put out 190 hp and after the '99 model year it was bumped to 200 hp for the manual and 195 for the auto.

Thanks for all the help guys, looks like I'm gonna take this guy.... THe car i must admit looks pretty badass but its was truly all show no go... we popped the hood and i wasn't impressed at all. i guess he dropped down too much $ on the exterior mods....
BTW, do any of you guys have a AEM intake put in.... how does it sound? And does it void the factory warranty? I know AEM is a trusted performance company but......?

i raced my friend prelude and slowly walked away

his car was a 01 EBP prelude 5 speed

light weight volks 18's
cai
tanabe exhaust
nos 50 shot
cf hood

when he wasnt shooting nos, it was a walk like nothing....also if he gets the jump on you your asses, cus our gears are too tall and it takes too long to get into vtec, make sure your in the lowest gear possible and then punch it, but off the line youwill surely own him...

wow a 13.2 time slip- whats he got under there a turbo? some major mods huh? I guess preludes can be pretty quick! They have a pretty good weight ratio... As to my race with that kid with the lude at my school- we haven't ran yet- its spring break....
I am hopefully puttin in my intake during this week? I was wondering if anyone else has had an CAI put in recently? How much for the install? Thanks

I did mine a few months ago. Not too hard to do yourself if you are handy. If you need some help let me know or search the forums, there is plenty of info. If not, usually about 65-100 bucks. Just to let you know I don't feel much difference, but the sound is awsome. By the way try to bring your race to the track, there have been some pretty tradgic racing stories lately. Keep it safe.

PS, I ran a 14.8

Thanks JPTLS21- for the advice... I think we are going to set up a run on this desolate road near my house... I live kind of in the boonies so there are plenty of empty stretches. We'll try to be safe. BTW I like your tints- what % are they? So 65-100 dollars for the intake install huh? Where did you go get it done?
