Raced a GS400 with torque converter

I recently raced my friend in his GS400. He has a intake and torque converter. No rims or anything else. Man that thing sounds mean.

Anyways, we've both talked about how the out come would be if we raced each other and being that its a modded GS400 and all, I didn't say much. Just wanted to know if i could hang with him. This one night we actually found out the answer to that question. The answer is YES.

It was about midnight on a weekday and there were no cars on the road. We both slowed to 20mph and all of the sudden I heard his torque converter, sounds like a supercharger spooling up.. anyways, we both stomped on the gas and we were neck and neck. All the way up to 80-85mph and then he just started to pull away from me slowly. But I was really impressed that the TLs could hang like that. Even though he's heavier than me it was pretty even as far as excess weight etc.

I think if i had headers, intake etc.. it would be really close up to 100mph.. but I don't plan on ever testing that theory unless I'm on the track.

Oh and one more thing... I noticed my Traction control light flash for a second when i floored it.. I'm assuming this is normal?

The traction control light coming on is normal when you stomp on the gas like that. It just means you had wheel spin for a second. Try it from start rather than a 20mph roll and that light will stay on for a long time, especially with VSA off.

What kinda intake? Some kinda suck if not installed with an ECU and actually HURT performance.

A TC on a GS 4 lowers 0-60 times .5-.3 seconds, so if the GS 400 does 0-60 in 5.7, you have a low 5 sec vehicle.

For the sake of not arguing, if the GS is a 6 sec vehicle, it is a mid 5 sec vehicle. The tc really helps from starts, so the 20 roll thing might not have benefited your friend.

If your Traction control light came on, how did you stay close with ANY car. That thing seriously hurts take-offs of any kind.

Well, good write up.

Hahaha... I was waiting for your reply 'SICKLEX'. Just a hunch you would comment on this one. No hating here bro.. just tellin it like it happen...

Anyways, my friend got an ECU, intake, and a torque converter. All tuned by SWIFT racing in MD. In fact his car was dynoed and tuned repeatedly for maximum output. He has the print out on the exact numbers but I think he got 30+ to the wheels. The numbers were really impressive. Don't get me wrong about the GS4.. I sweat that car and if I could afford it I would of gotten it..

But on that night I hung with him. Might not happen again... but the TLS pulled strong that night. Doesn't always pull like that but on that occasion it did.

So don't HATE just CONGRADULATE.

You heard his torque converter spooling up at 20mph before he took off? You sure it wasnt his intake as he stepped on the gas?

but I guess this all depends on what you mean by keeping up. Stock for stock these cars are not that far apart in sub triple digit territory, a good driver, TCS, etc could make up for the differences. In this case he wouldnt kill you by 10 car lengths, but he would definitely pull on you the entire time. Those TC's are one of the most beneficial mods you can make to a GS400, and he had more than that. maybe his ECU was not set up right, I have heard countless stories of ECU mods making things worse than before on NA platforms especially if all he has is an intake.

From a stop though I am sure he would have left you much further behind. Nice write up man, and if you have more info on that GS fill us in, sounds like a nice setup.

Very good deduction Mr.Hyde. I stand corrected. Maybe not spooling up but on the release. I'm sure it wasn't his intake. I've been racing for a loooong time and I'm no mechanic but I know the difference in sound.

And I'm sure if we did go from a straight stand still all I would of seen is the back of his license plate. But maybe we can see if theres truth to that next time we are out togther on the road. I'll be sure to post it next time we race from a stand still.

I know for a fact, the TL-S is no B!tch 0-100, very quick car IMO.

Jeez, I think I actually agree with what Hyde said

What is this forum coming to! Quick someone say something bad about the GS or the G35!

Personally I think the GS4 is a great car! (wait a minute that wasn't derogatory!)
