Question for guys w/ NAVI...

I'm trying to put video in my car, it doesn't have navigation. I purchased the dash piece and was going to buy the A/C controls. I was told that the Navigation screen also controls the A/C.....Is this true and can I use the A/C controls that go above the head unit w/o the Navi screen?????

What does the screen control, and can someone please unplug their Navi screen and see if it still works????

I think you are going to find that no one here has put a stock NAVI screen in a TL that didn't already come with it stock.

I will tell you however that the NAVI screen controls all the manual overrides for the A/C. Things like fan speed and which vents the air blows out of. I have no idea how its wired. Maybe its just a feed from the A/C controls to the NAVI screen.

I dunno about you, but if I were to go through all that time and effort to put in a navi on a car that doesn't have navi just to get video, I'd be better off just buying an aftermarket combo video/navi unit (e.g., Alpine, Pioneer, Panasonic--video only, as I don't think Panasonic has come out with a car navi unit yet but I could be mistaken here). At least the video will be much better and more integrated than the "video in my navi" concoction that people on this board have used to play video through the OEM navi screen.

Just my 2 cents worth...

When you asked about unpluggin the screen and will it still work, were you asking about the screen in general or will the AC still work if you unplug the screen?

I have unplugged the navi screen before and had it in my house while i was playing with it (ya, i'm stupid like that), but i never tried to operate the AC with it unplugged.

The factory NAV controls the flow of air and fan speed. The buttons above it is basically front defrost, A/C, and climate control. Basically if you take the NAV out, you won't be able to manually control the air.

I think he knows this. he doesnt have navi in his car.
Nsx4dr, i think since you already have the non navi a/c controls it wouldnt require you to have the navi a/c controls. I assume that you want to put the factory navi trim w/screen and relocate the a/c controls elsewhere (glove box, center console?) Is this what you are asking?

I was going to purchase the Navi A/C controls (that go where the cd pocket is), but I heard the fan speed is controlled by the Navi screen. If you can use the automatic portion of the controls that will work, I always leave it on automatic with the degree choosing the fan speed.......

The Fan Speed, Vent choice, and manual override of the A/C are all controlled through our screen, and are the only controls for it. There would be no way to test if vent control for example would work if the navi was removed as there are no other controls to use. Would the fan speed and A/C turn on by just using the Auto Climate Control???? Maybe, but I for one wouldnt want to loose the vent control, A/C override and fan speed control. On cold days initially I sometimes pump up fan speed a bit.

I agree with tdo; for all the time, $$ and work youd put into this project, it would probably be better to put in an aftermarket video screen.
