putting 19's back on.

hi guys i am plannning to put my 19's back on. and plan on going to the local car parts store to get a floor jack and something to remove and tighten the lug nuts.

what would be better a torque wrench or a lug wrench?

also when using a floor jack do you need to put something between the jack itself and the cars frame? like a piece of wood, steel???????
and is a 2 ton jack ok to get for our cars?

thanks

Find a flat place to start this, First I would either place the emgermency brake on or use a piece of wood behind the opposite side tire i am working on, i would loosen the lug nuts, basically breaking the torque, raise the vehicle using a floor jack(just enough to get the tire off the ground), then remove all lug nuts, I would inspect the lug studs and lugs for any metal chips if so just clean it off with a rag or something not your hand of course, reinstall your new wheels, install lug nuts(hand tighten first), make sure you do a star pattern, meaning place a lug nut opposite of the other lug nut then so on. I usally put my wheel lock on last. after hand tighten use your lug wrench and tighten the best you can you don't have to torque it at this time, lower the vehicle, and now torque to 80lbs. Repeat other sides. I hope that helps but i am not responible for any one getting hurt in anyway, shape or form. This is just the way i normally do it. Just make sure when you are hand tighten that the lug nut goes on smoooth and not real tight cause you might strip your lug stud and lug nut and possibly break it off.

i agree with lx4life. those are perfect instructions. as for what i would use to remove them,
i would either use a 1/2 inch ratchet/breaker bar with 19mm 6point socket on it or the factory wrentch.
i would get a torque wrench for tightening them (after they are snugged up by what ever you use to take the lugs off)
as for the jack, i would look for something with the largest lift pad you can find. like this one from craftsman,
the whole lift point on the car will be sitting in the cup of the lift pad and it is
less likely that you will have the lift point ever bend like some other members have encountered.
sears has them with jack stands included CLICK HERE

you dont need anything inbetween...if your lowered you probably wont beable to fit anyhting in between anyway (and if your not lowered you shouldnt be putting 19s on )... and you need a torque wrench to put on wheels if you plan on doing wheels yourself...a 4-way would be helpful on taking the lugnuts off, and there cheap so why not?...also if the lugnuts on your new rims are recessed into the rim then i would also get a deep socket and wrap it with electrical tape to protect your rim from scratches...

and what lx4lie said aobut torqueing to 80lbs....ive always donw 100lbs for aluminum and 80 for steel...i dont know whose right...maybe you could ask at your local tire store

you dont need any thing between.
no im not lowered but i have quite a bit of room between the lift point and jack. i used to use it on my 2 1/2" lowered prelude and 2" lowered civic with out a issue.
if you were to get a jack that didnt fit under the car, just get a small block of wood and drive the tire onto that and that should give you enough clearance. but you shouldnt have a issue with the craftsman jacks

i just used the jack that you reccomened fsttyms1 using the stock lifting point. And when i lowered the it, the lift point got bent. so the two front stock lift points are bent.

Now i cant use those lift points. Is there somewhere eles that you could use the jack to lift the car? can someone post a pic where i should put my jack underneath?

also where would i go to get the stock lift points repaired? dealer?

thanks guys for all the help so far.

how did the lift points get bent? was the cradle sitting on the lift point or was the lift point in the cup of the jack? those things should not get bent from proper lifting! i can lift the whole side of the car off the ground supported by the 1 lift point and have never bent one. i lift my car almost every month to rotate tires and change oil (due to amount of miles driven)

the lift point in the manu. is this very thin strip of metal.

i used that to lift the car. and the strip would not amke contact with both ends of the floor jack. so one side was outside the jack and the other end was in the cup.

its bent bad. and now i dont know what to do. is this the only place to life the car from?

on mine it fits in side the cup. hummm. get a channel locks and try to straighten it. since yours doesnt fit inside you could use a small block of wood so that it sits on the whole thing. you can continue to lift it from there even though its bent. that part of the car is structural and ment to be lifted from there. there are also 2 tow hooks in the fron of the car (one on each side) the car can be lifted from there also

how big is your lifting pad on the jack?

hum, im supprised your lift point didnt fit in the cup. my neighbor has that one and his fits mine too.

a channel lock (kinda like a pliers) vise grip or pliers any thing like that to bend it.
it wont crack.
im still confused on to how those keep bending on people. those things are designed to support more weight than the car

You can use the jack point at the front of the car. You'll see a spot direct center behind the front bumper that you can jack it up from.

Did you wheels come with centering rings? They look like big plastic washers that fit around the wheel hub.
