Purchasing a second Gen TL certified pre owned??

Hello i am new to this forum and just had a question. I am in the hunt for a TL and would any of you recommend buying a second gen TL certified pre owned? I am having a hard time deciding as a certified pre owned is very expensive. Thanks for the input

If you can find one used in the private party market, or a non certified, go ahead and save the money. Most 2nd gen TL's have warranty coverage on the transmission 7 years/100k. Aside from that the TL is pretty reliable.

if your buying it over 100k get it certified ---otherwise waste of money only major problem is covered under the 7/100k warranty

After the 7 year/100k miles warranty is there an option to get an extended warranty? I plan on keeping this car for a while and i dont want to end up paying for a transmission out of my pocket. Also thanks for the quick reply.

In order to be certified pre owned it has to been under five years old with less than 75k miles.

definitly double check the warranty to see how you're covered. Some of the '03s aren't covered with the 7 year.

I'm going by this info that's on the CL forum. I'm not sure if there are any updates to this list. If someone knows different, plz post.

Also, there was a thread last week or the week before about Acura putting new parts in the rebuild trannies. But I guess, only time will tell if these parts improve the situation.

*********

BACKGROUND

In certain vehicles, a higher than normal number of automatic transmission may have defects in material or workmanship that could cause premature wear or failure. To insure that customers have adequate warranty coverage, American Honda is increasing the warranty on the transmission (including solenoids) and the torque converter to 7 years or 100,000 miles whichever occurs first.

VEHICLES AFFECTED

2000-02 3.2TL: All

2003 3.2TL (except Type S):
From VIN 19UUA5…3A000001 thru 19UUA5…3A019556

2003 3.2TL Type S:
From VIN 19UUA5…3A000001 thru 19UUA5…3A019061

2001-02 3.2CL: All

2003 3.2CL (all models):
From VIN 19UYA42…3A000001 thru 19UYA42…3A005203

I think getting your Acura TL CPO (certified pre owned) is a good idea. Just recently I found out that I had a rear main seal was leaking ($900) and 2 engine mounts ($650) where also gone, and I was surprise as hell to find out that my CPO also was part of a extended warranty which over the power train for 7 years 100k miles, so everything was free. Your tranny might be covered as stated (tranny recall/warranty), but the power train and the 12months/12k bummer to bummer is a nice thing to have.

Yep. I agree. I used my 12 month bumper to bumper many times. Saved a ton o money especially when I had my seat cover replaced due to a small rip in the leather.

Yea i was kind of wondering about that too. I contacted them plenty of times and they say they sell at wholesale prices. I might go check them out this weekend. They also claim to have a better warranty than the factory one. Heres a link to there main site. http://www.platinumautos.com/

I 2nd that!!!

Holly shit! I haven’t gone car shopping in awhile but $19.5 for a 02 Type S with 23k miles on KBB? I wonder why our cars value is declining so rapidly? I guess maybe it is because of our troublesome tranny, or maybe it is the hot sales of the 3rd gen TL, so everyone is dumping their 99-03 for a brand new one?

Even better he said that it was on 03 type s for 19.5. In my opinion i think the second gen TL is better than the 3rd Gen. May not be in performance but i like the look.

Yeah, it threw me for a loop when I saw that number (Selected "Excellent" condition). It's an '03 Type S, No Navi. Been wrapped in Zaino pretty much since I picked it up. Aside from a door ding and a few hwy scars, it's showroom. My location is probably a factor.

I think the 2nd Gens got killed when the 3rd Gens hit the street. I also prefer the style and lines on the 2nd Gen.

Trade in, private sale, or retail?

I have to believe you could get more than that on the private market...(but maybe that's just wishful thinking on my part since I own the same car with NAV)...

The 2003s are definitely not all covered...

My service advisor thought that was the case, but I knew mine was not, so I asked him to check my VIN... He was shocked to discover that I was right...

Well, that's the KBB. It can probably sell for a little higher if it were private.

Dang...I guess there's no new news on that one...I'm outside the VIN# range too. Got a little over a year before my 4 year ends....I still have time to make a decision.

I still have 1 year before my warranty ends, I'll consider an extended warranty or move on and get another car....nothing out there really sparks my interest though.

I picked up the 7/75K extended warranty for under $1K...

Don't know if it was worth it... If the tranny goes out, I could just pay to get an aftermarket tranny installed... and if not...I would be able to keep my money...

Oh well... Just piece of mind...

As bad as I hate to say it, I can't recommend the 2nd gen TL anymore. It's truly a case where the sum of the parts is greater than the whole, rather than the other way around. I've been plagued with more problems than I care to think about. My warranty work receipts stack higher than a bible. Interior parts break at a rate faster than I can fix them (steering wheel column casing, CD holder door, cupholder, center console, change holder)... the leather, despite constant conditioning, has hardened. The seat heaters barely heat the seats. The transmission is original, but shifts so funky it is highly annoying. There is an incurable driveline vibration. Wires shorted out in the passenger door, ending function of the windows and moonroof recently (since repaired). The dash and passenger airbag assembly warped and had to be replaced, I fear the door panels are next as warranty ends. The list goes ON AND ON... I hate this piece of shit, this turd with 46k miles that I paid too much for and can't get rid of now.

I dont think there is any turning back for me, I will buy a TL and no other car (maybe a g35 but not yet.) I have had my eye on this car since i left high school. It is the only car that i want and maybe the only car i will get. For some reason the TL is the only car that appeals to me.
