Port and Polish with a dremel.

How hard is this to do at home, and what is the basic procedure to port and polish.

Also how are gains made by doing this.

well....there is cleaning the edges to remove casting irregularities and there is specific porting depending on what you are looking for

If you are just bored- clean all the edges so no flow disturbance from that and you will see improvements across the board

i heard it was crap doing it by hand, as in, don't do it and leaving it to the professionals to do it. But i always wanted to do it myself. I guess the gains are made because you open up the ports so that more air goes in.

hahhahh

no~

its angles and airspeeds and direction of air spin and then when in vtec that all changes as it delays the 2nd intake valve opening just a hair, creating its own tornado as it enters the combustion chamber

smoothing rough edges so all the holes match size is good
If you have a spare manifold to play with- try it

otherwise step back sloooowwwwwly from the engine bay.....

and focus more on how aircraft speed polish will make the car faster
wax on wax off

what are you saying no to? more air plus more fuel = more power. do you agree?

when you port the head, you take away some restrictions to open up the intake and exhaust ports.

I ported and polished my S manifold when i put it in, i used a dremel with an extension to get all the way in. The main part to focus on is the intake horn, basically the Y shaped part of the manifold. If anyone wants a spare TLP manifold for cheap PM me, i have no use for it.

did you notice any difference when doing this mod? I'm assuming you didn't port match the head huh?

you can do it with a dremel. ive done it. You have to becarefull though, you dont want to try to enlarge things too much, you can cause a negative effect. TYhose who ask if you can feel a difference, No, but when was the last time you felt 5-8 hp??? Do a search, ive posted pics of the one i did.
You would see the largest gains if you port matched the head as well

no my heads are not ported, but my lower manifold runners are and that helps a bit. Every little bit of increased airflow helps. My throttle body is also bored. I put everything on at once, typeS manifold hand ported, typeS TB bored, and lower runners extra honed. I definately felt gains but by just porting your manifold a bit i doubt you could feel it.

to do it right you should match the ports, do the valve bowls, and do it all. probably wont notice the difference though.

Good pic examples of what I was saying about smoothing the roughness out

What I said NO to was- that simple guess and go for it porting was a viable method= no

I heard you can pour sand in the motor and achieve the same results.

And, painting your rotors red will increase your stopping power.

maybe too much late night tv with the duralube demostration

We poured tar, chicken feathers, sand and cut the coolant lines and this motor ran for several seconds before suffering terminal damage, and 30 minutes before it blew into little pieces of shrapnel !!!

Or perhaps he meant that amatuer porting attempts work about as well as pouring metal shavings in you oil

No. Lots of good shops will force a clay type substance thru it that has grit to it to help smooth thing and polish at the same time. Sand blasting will make things rough.
