poor ding protection?
I was just in the body shop to get an estimate to repair a scratch on my door and the guy showed me numerous door dings on either side visible only at an angle. It seems that the existing ding protection is very poorly designed as it is pretty low and does not extend far enough.
Any feedback on this?

No matter where they put that protector, there will be some dumbass out there who doesn't have respect for your property and don't know how to properly open a frekin door.
Not only do you have to worry about the door dings, you have to worry about people's bags, large asses, and keys.
Oh and don't forget the tall ass SUVs, your door protector comes up to their tire. So guess where their door is at?
The only 100% way to protect your car from these is the same way to prevent getting a flat tire, leave it in the garage and not drive it.
That or until they invent a portable bubble that you can put around your car.
I hate door dings too, but what can we really do?

Vin says 2001, but it's really a 2000 with an upgraded cupholder!!

I agree! Protection is pretty limited on the TLS. I noticed a slight 'ding' on my car I have only had since Monday! I thought I inspected it enough before I drove off the lot for the first time
but it appears I missed this one. I haven't parked within a block of another car since Monday.
Its pretty sad when I have to take PARKING into consideration when I decide where to go for lunch everyday! My co-workers think I'm nuts! I am going to swing by the dealer and see if I can easily get the 'ding' removed. Good luck!

haha! jwengel is this your first new car or something :-) I remember going into emotional shock when I got the first ding on my first new car - a Honda Accord LX :-) Actually it was more than that - I was being soooo damn careful that I was dreaming and smashed into a pole when backing up!!
Obviously I hate the feeling of discovering dings on my car...but I will not adjust my lifestyle just to prevent this.

I must have assed myself out today. I went out to at In-N-Out and tried to park as far away from other cars as I could.
Sure enough, this old Mustang 5.0 park about 8 inches next to me. Those things are 2 doors too.
Freakin A!! Now I'm pissed!

Unfortunately, dings are a way of life. You can park as far away from any human or vehicle and lo and behold, when you get back to your car, the nastiest car parked right next to you. Even though there were many other spaces. People who drive pieces of crap don't care about other peoples fine rides. I'm just glad I can keep it garaged most of the time.

Why does that happen? When I had my GS400, I ALWAYS parked well away from everyone else in the parking lot. Then I would return to find some old piece of crap parked next to it a lot of the time. I park my TLS well away from everyone else and the same thing happens now and then. Why don't those pieces of Bandini park somewhere else?
You won't believe what I am about to tell you. When I first picked up my car from the dealer and took off to go Chinatown in Los Angeles. When I got home I found a ding on my right passenger side rear fender. I was so upset that I wanted to kick someone. Three days later I was scheduled to go to the dealers for the LoJack installation. On the invoice, their were three things to be done on that same day. Here are the three things listed:
1. LoJack Installation
2. Loaner car requested
3. Check for a ding on the right rear passenger side fender.
I asked the service guy how did they know about the ding. He said that I was the one who told them about the ding but I denied it. I was so fired up and ready to chop someone's head off! Obviously they knew the ding was there when they delivered it. Those SOBs are really tricky. However, they were able to unding it. So, for those who haven't bought their cars yet, make sure you check thoroughly before you take the keys. Otherwise, good luck!
