Pleather in the TL?

I have a 2000 TL-p that I purchased brand new. The car has been garage kept, both at home and work, and also sports tinted windows.

A couple of days ago I noticed a small tear in the leather--the strip along the 1.5" edge of the seat. I couldn't tell if it was a crack or tear.

In any case, called a leather repair man to see what it would take to fix it--he said this was a common problem on the Acura's: splitting of the "pleather" - not leather (vinyl). It was only then that he told me most of the seat is vinyl--only the part where you sit and up your back is leather.

He said, most people don't know it isn't leather. I didn't!?!? (maybe I should have)

On 99% of cars that have leather interiors, look at the fine print in the ads: "leather seating areas" meaning only the part that comes in contact with your body. On high end cars, leather covers more areas. My mom had an '83 Porsche 928S with the optional leather interior ($2,000 option at that time); every square inch of the interior was leather covered (headliner, door panels, dashboard and complete seat upholstery).

I learned six months after I bought by car in 2001 that the whole seat was not leather, when I treated the leather for the first time. I also was a bit disappointed too. I have the same problem as you about the tear in the seat on the conner. Mine is really small. Been thinking about having it fixed. How much did it cost you to have it repaired?

So only the middle parts of the front and back seats are leather? How about the head rests? Console (front and back)? Door areas? Just wondering which parts I should use leather cleaner/conditioner on and which should be cleaned/protected by something else.

They DO say "leather seating surfaces". This is just fine by me. I would rather not pay the extra couple thousand it costs to upholster everything in leather. I don't sit on the side of the seat cushon, nor do I go around squeezing it. I beleive the door inserts are leather though.

I been using the same product for the past 6 years. Everyong who get in my car always compliments and ask me "what do you use?"

I get it from www.finishfirst.com. It is the only product I use as I converted to Zaino years ago, but didn't care for his pleather/leather conditioner.....Rememeber you don't need to "clean" new leather seats, just condidtion them to prevent it from cracking etc......don't you apply lotion to your skin ? Same applies to pleather/leather seats, they need to be moisterized too !

and .....
My product is the easiest to apply to...rub on once and thats it ! All those others make you apply, let sit, then wipe down......too much work......one layer and that it !
When I buy my Acura's new, I mandate that they don't touch it. Give it to me off the truck plastic wrapped from the factory. You would be amazed how DULE the dash etc. are from the factory ! Once I apply this stuff.....WOW it looks like the way they used to come from Honda in the early 80's ! Now they try to sell that junk to you when your buying your car....called some protection crap......its all about Honda sending cars to dealership NOT buffed so they can show you the difference. BIG money profit scam ! The products they use (push) are toxic junk and idiots applying it at your dear dealership, ya know those bunch of guys "under the gun" .....................yah........
