The definiative Pleather thread

So, have we reached a final consensus on which parts of the seat are "pleather" and which are not? I'm starting to agree with those who think that some of the non-perforated parts are leather.

After inspecting our seats and the seats in my sisters '02 EX v6 Accord.
I think the Honda seats are all leather. Door inserts too.

On a tangent here but, would you treat the pleather and leather portions differently? I just used leather conditioner on the entire seat. Once it absorbs in I plan to go over it with 303 Aerospace Protectant. Would this process harm one but not the other?

I really think that everything you sit on is leathers. The rest like the sides and the back are not.

But I havent seen anything offical

I've had cars in the past with leater seating surfaces and pleather. You could tell in 2sec. what was pleather vs. real.

And if the TSX has some pleather areas like backs and sides, it's the best freaking pleather I have ever seen. I mean we are talking from genetic pleather cows or something. Color match and texture are so much the same. I'm sticking with full leather.

I vote for the sides and back being pleather, from good plows. I think the non-perforated sections that you sit on/against are leather.

I agree. That's why these now advertise "leather SEATING surfaces" rather than leather SEATS. The sides and back are textured vinyl to keep costs down. They can be cleaned and treated the same.

In theory, conditioner should not be absorbed into "pleather" it would just sit on top, leaving it greasy and potentially attracting dirt.

303 will bond to either leather or vinyl, so it won't be an issue.

I've come to agree with those of you who think: 1) the TSX has the best "pleather" I've every seen, 2) there perforated and non-perforated parts you sit on are all leather.

The back and sides are definitely pleather. In fact, the back and sides are pleather in may "leather" interiors.

From my own experience, the pleather is much easier to clean and care for anyway. Might as well use it on the areas that people do not actually sit on.

The backs are definitely pleather. Honda's been building 'em that way for at least 15 years. Not sure about the sides ... on previous Acks, the side panels were the real deal.

There are creams and waxes out there that claim to be for both; I use them as I don't want to spend time figuring out which is which (and when I was a kid, I didn't keep between the lines in my coloring book............) -

Also, you can tell which is leather vs fake by putting a drop of water on it. If the surface darkens, then dries back to normal, it is leather. If the surface doesn't absorb, or the surface doesn't change color, its plastique.........

a google search will turn up tons of products that will deal with both. I use some Brit cream, but I forget the name of it. Expensive, but easy application, great results. Leaves the vinyl not shiny.............

So much for 'definitive'. We have like 3 different theories about what is really leather.

So...are the sides and bolsters leather or pleather?

Next time I'm in town I'm going to stop off at the auto interior shop that put the roof back on our Mitsu-Spyder and I'll ask the pros what is what, but I think it's all the same crap.

I know the entire front seat on the 02 Accord is leather, we tore the seat cover and had it repaired under warranty...it was all leather. So I would assume so too is the TSX.

Who started this pleather crap in the first place and why?

Like I said we have owned cars in the past with the mixture of both and it takes all of 5-min to spot the difference. This car is so freaking close I have little doubt they would cheap out over such small amounts of fabric.

I've also watched on prior Accords how the corners of the seat have worn and it was all leather not just the middle. So this again would make me believe the entire seat not just the perforated part is leather.
