Please help with cleaning EGR valve/intake

Hello All,

I know these posts have been addressed with the Check Engine Light and insufficient egr flow. I searched and saw a post that had pictures of a clean intake. I need to do this work but I am a little challenged with the EXACT steps that are needed to access the EGR valve to clean it as well as the intake. PLEASE, if anyone has the time, could you post the directions so that even a moron like myslef can understand and complete the job. I do not want to pay assura 400+ bills for them to clean my system for me. That is weak. I also do not want to continue staring at the CEL from now till the time that I get rid of the car.

I appreciate in advance all of the help you can supply.

Have a good one!

Axe

its really easy. you dont have to do any thing with the egr valve. its all in the intake. (i had to do this twice now, 1bout every 75k)

take off the rubber hose that connects the throttle body to the air box. then remove the 2 cables that go to the throttle body you will have to pull it (like you have it floored) to see how to remove the cables. unplug the tps sensor. not take off the plastic cover on the engine- 4 qomm bolts. then take off the small piece that covers the valve cover (2 plastic screws). now look for any hoses that connect to the intake manifold and unhook. the top plate has 10 10mm bolts. take those out and remove the piece straight up (being carefull not to damage the gasket, you will reuse it) no if you look straight down you will see 8 bolts ( i cant remember off the top of my head what size those are) remove those and pull that piece straight up. with every thing off you will see all the carbon that needs to be cleaned. get a scrub brush and 2 or 3 cans of SPRAY carb cleaner and start cleaning. its really simple and a rip off what the dealer charges.
if you run into any thing PM me

fsttyms1,
THANK YOU for the detailed reply. I was reading your post with the pix last night so I am glad that it was you that replied. As for heehaww: CHEAP????? Sorry but cheapness does not imply wasteful spending. Fsttyms1 has supplied a solution that is nearly 2 orders of magnitude less expensive. I am not for throwing good money to help fund the assura service departments!!!!!

Remember a fool and his money???

Later,
Axe

fsttyms1, You post great info on these boards. I'm having the EGR problem now myself and I appreciate you posting this good info for people like myself. Hopefully you won't mind if I need a little assistance with this if I run into any problems.

No CARB CLEANER!!!

It can mess up your sensors faster than you can say "what the @#$%!". Use special intake cleaner for this job - ask a friendly salesperson in your favorite auto parts store to point you in the right direction

well with the instructions that i posted there are no sensors that get hit with carb cleaner. thats not the problem. the problem was with the EGR return ports getting Plugged up with carbon. spray carb cleaner is safe to use and the easiest because it helps brake up the carbon faster. oh and the mechanic at teh dealer is where i first learned how to do it over 79k ago when he was doing it to mine and 2 other cars that day and he was using the same stuff. Carb Cleaner. it didnt mess any thing up on mine cause i have a friendly 159,000 miles on it trouble free (whell the engine any way! the tranny is a different storry!)
