Picked up CL6 Engine/Tranny, amazing price!

So I found an add on craigslist for CL-6 heads near Atlanta for $150 each, the listing also had the rest of the block for $100, since it had a crack where the tranny mounted. The internals are good, and really I only needed the heads and CL-6 specific sensors and timing components. Then a few minutes later saw another add by the same guy for a CL-6 tranny for $100, due to the front half of the bell housing around the flywheel/clutch being broken.

I jumped on it.

Drove outside Atlanta last night from Nashville and met up with the guy this morning. He had the whole car sitting in his yard....saddest CL I've ever seen. It literally made me feel sick. Anyhow I had assumed due to the seperate adds and wanting to sell the cylinder heads individually that everything had been separated. I was wrong, the entire engine, tranny, intake manifold, and all the accessories were sitting together still bolted up and bolted to the subframe. I asked him what he wanted, expecting to hear $500 after doing the math from his adds...

he said "$100 for the engine, $100 for the tranny".

I almost screamed, but remained calm and handed him the cash. I asked him if I could get the guages, wiring harness and ECU, said I'd throw him like another $150 and he said sure! While I was taking the gauges out he walks up and says, "anything else you see inside the car, its yours". FREE STUFF!!!!!!!! Harness had been cut, and I couldn't get to the ECU as the damage from the accident had it kinda pinned, but he said he'd take it out and hold it for me, said it'd be $100 next time I saw him.

This guy was great, he knew what he had but only bought the car for the rear half. He owns a body shop and his friend needed the back half of a CL! Said he didn't really want to wait around to sell it all separately and said he could use the cash now anyhow, cover his costs of the car.

So....the run down:

$250 for complete CL-S 6-Speed engine with all accessories and transmission still attached and bolted to the subframe , and gauges.

Free:
got the shifter, linkages, entire center console with cup holder and brake assembly, full upper dash trim with clock/climate controls/sunroof and cruise controls and dimmer buttons, lower center dash molding below the radio, shift knob/boot/trim assembly.

I'll probably sell the rods and crank, maybe use the pistons if not the RL pistons, and a new bell housing is roughly $300.

Ironically I needed a new A/C compressor clutch already, but now that wont be a problem given I have 2 of every accessory lol.
I'll be getting the ECU soon

not bad huh?

Engine/Tranny:

Donor Car.... RIP:

Inside...:

you can get engines and tranny's from LKQ for that price if you look through their inventory.. no problems either... they warrant their parts...

i've seen whole motors for 150 and trannies for less...

Type-S engines and CL-6 trannys for $150? I'm having a hard time seeing that. Everytime I've looked through LKQ inventories, they have pretty average prices for them ($650+ CL6 engine, $1400+ CL6 tranny)

Other engines and trannys sure, but these...?

whoops didn't see your post

Yeah, actually a giant hole tbh. Its actually on the clutch case, not the case that contains the gears and stuff. I'll probably have to get a flywheel from somewhere as this one is extremely rusted, same with the clutch (Exedy most likely). So its gonna cost me some to have the tranny in working order, but shouldnt come close to the $1400 or so average of a used tranny with no clutch.

If I happen to run into some amazing deal on an Accord tranny with no damage, I might pick that up and just throw the LSD from this one in it , we'll see how it goes. At $100, I really cant complain

Also, during some disassembly today I took a look under the front valve cover and it looks very good in there, no discoloration or wear as I could see, but then again I only took a quick look as it was getting dark. Should have the entire engine, including internals, disassembled within the next few days

We weren't saying you can't find TL-P engines for cheap, or even automatic Type-S engines for cheap at times.

There were only 3,511 CLs-6's ever made, so only 3,511 of their engines as well. The Type-S engine from a 6-speed CL has different timing components and sensors than the standard Type-S, finding those for under $600 that can actually run or be salvaged to run is almost impossible. And the trannys...don't even think about it. I think Phee found a rebuilt TL6 tranny for like $700 from a dealer, but thats a fluke in itself.

motors arent automatic.. but i get what your saying..

and salvage yards dont price according to rarity.. if its a wrecked CL.. its a wrecked CL.. they charge a price according to what they feel they should... any given day a salvaged motor or tranny is at the mercy of the person running the yard.. they dont have set prices...

its just crazy to me to assume theres a threshhold on price for motors... seen h22a's go for under 100 bucks.. they arent exactly cheap... to each their own though

Ok, you seem set to argue so I'll point things out exactly for you...

- When someone says an automatic Type-S engine, they mean an engine from an automatic. Theres an automatic Type-S, and a manual Type-S. The manual engine has different timing components and sensors.

- Yes salvage yards DO price according to rarity if they know what they're doing, and the majority of them do. A mustang SVT cobra engine is generally not priced the same as a V6 or mustang GT engine. They aren't looking at it with the view "if its a wrecked mustang...its a wrecked mustang...".

- no one said they have set prices, clearly said on average.

- You've seen h22a's go for $100. I just bought a J32A2 from a 6-speed for $100. Nobody said it can't happen, it just rarely does.

- 6MTUA5 also agreed, they're not cheap. Ask around, almost nobody pays less than $600 for this exact kind of engine.

- If you're going to be overly technical about things, then technically its not a "motor" as you said. Its an engine.

To each is own, but know your facts first before arguing a point please

Not to be rude, but the argument is void. I'd like to keep the thread open... back on topic...

wow you took that a bit far... nobody was discrediting your find. no need to defend like anyone was bashing you. i was making a comment that its possible to find these items at this price and you took offense for some reason? as if nobody else should be able to get the price.

there are slight differences between a cl-S and TL-S engine.. but not enough to make a shit of a difference.. if were being "Technical"

a good driver would win with either..
trying to give a source where other people can find good deals on these items was not a personal attack on you or your thread, and YOU not i.. turned this into a "disagreement" i dont argue over the internet..

clearly its possible to get it at that price or the thread wouldnt be here.. but trying to null what i said simply because its not a normal price isnt doing anything but sounding like your throwing a fit..

why is this even a discussion.. you can find motors and tranny's for under 200 bucks.. end of story.. wanna argue that. take it up with every person who has done so.

i have an entire S motor from the DEALER in my garage for 100 dollars even.
they paid that exact price for it.. from no other than LKQ. so i dont see your point in going against what i said? im speaking from experience on that matter.. thats all.

but i guess none of you can get these deals! they are special!

out

if you are familiar with your acura dealer ask the parts dept. to keep an eye out. not to mention they order lots of stuff from LKQ.

or, just keep an eye on LKQ's website and their ebay store and you come across some wacked out stuff

almost bought a new navi screen few week back.. mine works.. but it was buy it now for 20 bucks... coulda turned around and sold for 200

and sorry for the bickering in the thread... you just cant win on here sometimes nobody takes things the right way

I dont know what you're talking about...

Haha, in the end I expect to put $600-700 in the tranny, but it will be a fully rebuild 6-speed with the LSD, better than one for $1400 that needs to be rebuilt
