LOL, it's a "capacitor" (stiffening capacitor to be precise).

Yeah who cares about a silly cap? A cold beer is far more impressive!

I've been thinking about what I could put there... in my car my sub is on the other side of the pass-through so its useless as it is... don't really need a capacitor... any other ideas?

Question

Excuse my ignorance, but what exactly does a capacitor do?

Thnx~

A capacitor stores up enegry and releases it as needed to explain it simply.

Nate, how about a light up Acura Emblem or something (not the small indiglo badges), I mean like a piece of plexi glass with the "A" overlayed in it and a neon light behind it....I can hook you up if you want

Emag! RC Circuits!

Well I feel dumb since Ron's already answered your question, but this is largely in my territory just after having taken Electromagnetics. Basically in any RC (Resistor-Capacitor) Circuit, you're gonna have a (suprise surprise) a resistor and capacitor.

Most things that you get output of are resistors, like lightbulbs, speakers, the things in toasters that heat up and glow red, are all typical resistors.

A circuit with just a resistor will run current through it as the resistor demands. Sometimes the resistor will ask too much current from the power source and the power source will sorta take a crap on it, and that's like when your speakers hit really hard, your lights dim.

A capacitor stores energy so that when your speakers hit really hard you dont have to worry about that...

Is that about accurate, Ron?

Two conducting plates separated by an electrolytic. A voltage is applied to the capacitors and an excess of electrons are stored on one end of the capacitor, so the capacitor has a charge stored on it. Caps are measured in farads, with caps in car systems usually in the 1 farad range. Capacitors this big are electrolytic capacitors and have a polarity to them. If you plug them in backwards they will explode.

I will stop rambling now.

hey street, i'm interested in what you're saying about the plexi with emblems on it lit up by neon. i'm trying to find time over christmas break to install my system and is thinking of creating something with the above feature. how do you etch designs into the plexi? is there such a spray can at hobby stores or something that i can buy to etch plexi like they have for glass? i'm brainstorming and thinking of building the trunk with a lightweight design using aluminum sheets, fiberglass, some mdf, and some plexi for a nice touch.
