Painting the Y pipe

Anyone know if it makes a difference if you sand the surfice before u paint or treat it with some rust removing chemical? Do I have to take it off or can I paint the pipe while it on the car?

I want to do it before th ewinter comes and the snow and salt beat up the exhust.

I sanded it down with 100 grit sandpaper...it's recommended...better adhesion. I got plenty of paint and sand paper....if ya want, i can help ya out..

Sanded it down first to remove all dirt, and for best adhesion. If u get Rustoeleum paint, it'll take care of any possible rust, etc. Anyway, that pipe is stainless steel and you're seeing discoloration not rust. Dont need to remove it. I just crawled under and sprayed it several coats. Looks so much better black.

I painted mine a while back in black. I think I will repaint it with silver high temp paint since I have my comptech exhaust on so it will match nicely.

I painted mine when it only had about 2K miles on it. There wasn't any rust on it so I didn't bother sanding it. I've got 7500 miles on it now and no problems. Looks freshly painted.

If it comes off, I'll paint it again. I've got plenty of paint.

got mines in silver

its good to have it.
i took off the whole cat back up to where cat. convertor was.....
must sand it other wise some parts that are rusted will start to chip off and all your work goes down the drain you'd have to do it over,
im talking bout the most important part is where the 2 separate pipes meet, sand em hard cause badly rusted, should see a good shiny silver silver underneath,

if your behind me with your car you'd see it
its the same thing in hi heat, but got in silver from home depot,
i think there was white color also.........

Since you got plenty of them, hook a brother up with paint and sandpaper Ed. I am painting mine hopefully soon too.
