Question Paint Caliper, correct rust issue on Rotors

I'm buying one of those caliper paint kits this weekend, but I was wondering how do I get rid of the rust issue on the rotors, with my new wheels it shows. Can I paint that inside area (that the pad doesn't touch)? also the outer edge....need advice.

sand them down before you paint them.

I don't suggest painting your rotors. If I were you, I would cover the rotors with newspaper, and any other part that has the potential to be sprayed by the paint. A lot of ppl on this forum have rusted rotors including myself. It's just soomething you have to deal with.

painting the rotor is fine, just try not to get too much paint on the area that the brake pads touch. you are going to need a very high temp paint though because the rotors/hub area get very hot

On your rust question - The only way to get the hi temp paint to really bond with the rotor is to meda blast the rotors before painting. This gets all the rust and grease off and just leaves bare metal for the paint to bond to. You'll find over time that due to the extreme operating temps of rotors (500 - 700) degrees that even the hi temp paint doesn't hold up after a year or two. I would go with a silver color so that as the paint gives up down the road it won't look too bad. Oh & be sure to blow out the rotor fins well after you blast.

spend the xtra time and take your wheel off, there is two bolts holding the entire caliper on and it is extremly easy to take off and put on. I pulled all four calipers off and used a dremel tool to clean them up. Grinded all of the rust off and put a couple of coats directly onto cleaned metal. The look great. and it was well worth the time.. even though the grinding took a while, I'm very thurough when working on the car. I would have been pissed if I spend that time and they didn't look perfect...

Since you're painting your calipers, It would be a great time to go ahead and throw on some drilled & slotted new rotors. That would make your paint job look Killer! :lol1:
