Thumbs down Oxiclean

Yeah...I sold out and bought some Oxiclean from walmart to use on my floor mats. I guess I have really dirty shoes since the driver's mat is now a nice shade of dark brown instead of the tan color (bought the car new in Oct 99).

Did it according to the directions...1/8 of a scoop in 16oz of water...then i dumped it on the floor mat...let it sit for like 15 mins...and dumped clean water on, used an old towel to pick up the bulk of the water...and it's drying right now.

So far it hasn't destroyed the mat, but I'm not impressed. Really didn't do much of anything.

I think I'll do it again tomorrow and use a full scoop of it.

Anyone ever try it before?

Dude, you can't just dump it on and rinse it off. You need a fairly stiff brush to get the dirt out of the carpet fibers. Scrub the carpet, not too harsh and it should come clean.

Try again my friend.

Directions didn't say to scrub...it said pour it on and let it sit 5-30 mins, then flush with plenty of clean water.

Now, on the other carpet cleaners I've used...like the 409 foaming stuff, they say scrub the hell out of it.

I use Tuff Stuff foam cleaner. comes out well. No scrubbing just let the foam sets 5 minutes. Or you can buy a set of new mats $129 then buy clear ones ($8 walmart) to put over it. Replace the clear ones periodically

I use some Woolite foaming carpet cleaner in a light blue can on my floormats and it works very well.

Also, I've used Oxiclean around the house and it seems to work pretty well, too, although I do mix it a little stronger than the directions suggest.

I gave up on carpeted floor mats just after I bought my TL, went to the all-weathers, and never looked back! Works better than Oxyclean! j/k

I use Tuff Stuff in the can, it's good stuff... Took out most anything I used it for.

Shampooing floormats

I have an auto detail shop so I have a machine that does it, but the next best thing to use is white wall cleaner. Give the mats a quick vacuum, then wet the mats down with water (enough so it will foam up but not too much) then spray the mats down with straight white wall cleaner and scrub them really good with a tight bristle brush. Rinse them out with water and lay them in the sun to dry. If they're really dirty do it one more time. If they still don't look good than you might want to buy a can of spray dye that matches your carpet. Costs about $6 a can. Give them a few light coats and it should do the trick. Good luck!

I'm pretty sure Oxiclean is only good for organic stains. If you watch the commercials, they only use it on stuff like wine, coffee and mildew stains--all products that are based on plants. My guess is that it the oxygen in Oxiclean screws with the cell walls and other organic molecules to get rid of the color and odor.

Dirt on the other hand, is just dirt. Minerals, rocks, and whatever dirt is made of. The oxygen can't bond to the molecules, so it can't hide its appearance. Getting rid of dirt requires a vacuum, a good ol' carpet cleaner, and a stiff brush.

I just spray some simple green all over the mats, let it sit for a minute or so and then brush them good and rinse, works really well. Yeah, oxyclean is a joke, that stuff just really doesn't work well at all.....anything that is "seen on tv" usually is junk.

OXYCLEAN works great in combination with bleach on my whites! I don't use it for anything else. Quick n Brite works best on most stains!
