trans fluid is checked after 20 minute freeway drive- then stop engine in Park-
remove dipstick and wipe- insert fully- remove and read
If its above the upper dot- remove some fluid quickly!
Overfilled trans fliud froths and thats really bad

Yeah thats what I did and thats how much I drained out to get it under the FULL mark. I just bought the car ('02 TL-S 146k) and they (dealer) told me the trans fluid was recently "changed"

Looks like they did the drain 3 quarts and refill- the basic method. The good way is 3 times doing that in a row- many threads -just look or use search.
Probably the shop kid drained 3 and put in 4

As long as you fixed it, and now you know to look over everything in the car

Keep checking it for a week to be sure the level stays the same.

Is it really that bad???? because mines is about 1/2 inch to a inch over the top dot, about a month ago I got some new seals and tranny fluid was added, and its been fine up until now and still is fine, i just never went to take it back to get some drained out

Anything over FULL- is over FULL and a real problem- the limited space for fluid makes it worse- take it back to the shop- explain how to check the fluid when HOT only, and set it correctly

Mine was about 1/4 inch over the FULL dot on the dipstick. Im guessing I drained almost a quart out to get it just below the FULL dot. Overfilling is bad in any auto trans in any car.

Im guessing the auto "techs" probably filled our cars and then checked them with the engine running?? Which is the normal method for most cars.

I checked mine after driving the car about 10 miles and getting to full operating temperature, then turned off the engine and put trans in park.

Since it is really hard to read and find the tranny fluid level on the dipstick, the easier way to check the fluid is:
If the fluid covers the first lowest hole of the dip stick, you are fine.
else
If the fluid does not cover the first lowest hole of the dipstick, your tranny fluid is low
else
If the fluid covers both holes on the dipstick, you overfilled your tranny fluid
else
break

Or you could do the~ drive it till properly warm- and then check it, engine off, like you are supposed to. My fluid is very easy to read on the dipstick since its not a clear fluid by any means!
Anything not at max needs adjusting, whether brake fluid- washer fluid or transmission.

The two holes at the bottom are the holes you need to be concerned with.

This tranny is overfilled since fluid is far past the 2nd hole:

A little over isn't bad, most transmission has a vent in it, the fluid does expand when it got hot. If it got a little bit high it will eventually vent out the vent hose. But much higher may cause the front transmission seal to blow out.

Even bone cold, if that is an accurate reading, that is too high. I don't want to assume too much, but you did wipe the dipstick, and dip again, right?

only readings with 15 minute freeway warmup drive can be used

anywhere BETWEEN the holes is right--dont want it at top hole or over

Yes there is a vent- but fluid cavitates, aerates, foams, and other bad things for itself and abilty to lubricate and cool the trans parts-----
before any excess will blow out the vent--which still doesnt lower level to perfect

If you had a fluid change done and level is too high- drain it DIY or back to the shop immedialty

Yes & yes. Even did it multiple times to make sure. The level's fine now. Very rough estimate is that I had to drain about half a quart. You'd assume that if you just got the tranny rebuilt that you wouldn't have to worry about these things. I just happened to check the level for kicks some weeks after the rebuild was done & discovered how high it was.

they probably threw in 8 qts without thinking about it- capacity 7.3
You give the shop kid x number of bottles and they are going to install them!!
