yeah, i adjusted my temp down a few degrees to compensate for road heat...it was always a few degrees off. kind of hard to get a true reading with all the engine heat, heat from the metal around the sensor and all that other stuff, but as i drive by banks and signs with the temp, its always within a degree or two, so its in the ballpark

check the owner book
It takes 10 minutes driving for the heat to be read correctly
Often the internal adjust gets changed when resetting the oil reminder, turn the key on at wrong time and the display goes to the temp adjust instead of oil reset--ooops

You can set it really good by making a glass of ice water- stick the probe in it
wait a few minutes and adjust display to 32

the purpose of the temp display is to make you aware of potential road icing conditions in the winter--

funny you say that..my rear view mirror mounting plate must of got hella hot, heated up glue or something and rear view mirror came off and a chunk of windshield along with it about the diameter of a quarter...took 1/2 the thickness of the glass!!!..I am not kidding. Just had safellite replace windshield under warranty since windshield was replaced less than 8 months ago...no rear view mirror explosion though..thank goodness
