Exclamation One Problem With This Forum

First, don't get me wrong. I really like participating in this forum. It has provided me with considerable information and helped me learn about all the TLS features long before I would have through the formal Acura channels. The one issue I have is the number of posts that are inaccurate and uninformed, based on a person's opinion sometimes even contradicting the owner's manual which all we TLS owners have. Opinion is good but I think it would be a more reliable site if the information offered in a post was qualified by the author. If it is more than your opinion, say so. Give us the source of your information. If not, we know it is your opinion only and we can judge on that basis. Some people on this forum have a great deal of good information. Others are full of s*it.

My opinion!!

What do you expect, it's a public forum with hundreds and hundreds of users. This forum is built to share information and opinions. If you want facts, go to www.acura.com . That's not what this site is built on. It's for people with a common interest to gather and talk about their cars and such. Opinions, rumors, and BS is going to be mixed in with some fact. That's just the way it is. Go to any BB and you'll see the same thing. If you have been around you'll realize that this site is one of the sites with the least amount of BS that is out there on the web......

Sometimes people aren't posting BS, they are just posting things they have tried or things they have experienced. Just because you think what they said won't work or you haven't experienced it doesn't automatically make it BS.

If something interests you, then just ask the author where they got their information. If you think what they said is way out of line then just ignore it. And if they are really off base or are starting to get harassing then a mod will step in and lock or delete the post.

You have a good point OldGuy. But common sense on the part of the reader has to come in somewhere. The people here aren't dumb. When something off-base comes around it gets plenty of scrutiny. Take Shyne's postings about his super-sonic spark plugs and the reactions from the members here. If that doesn't convince you, I don't know what will.

You said a mouthful there oldguy. I couldn't agree more.

Read my response to the question about what to check before taking delivery. Very thorough I thought.

I guess you have to take it for what it's worth anyway. It's a free forum and what do you expect for nothing eh?

Thumbs up

OldGuy, as another "OldGuy" of sorts, I agree with your point. However, it is up the the reader to figure out what is opinion and what is fact.

Think about the NAV topic, some people go CRAZY screaching that "There is no way that NAV is worth $2000!!!", others will contradict. How can someone quantify what something is worth to someone else? They can't. Maybe they feel that way, maybe they can't afford the $2K, so their posts justify their lack of the NAV. Who knows?

If someone says "Don't change the oil for 100,000 miles", we have to use our common sense and do what we think is right. Just because some nameless poster says something, it does not mean that it is gospel.

Part of the "fun" of this forum is getting the wide array of comments from not just the TL dirvers, but prospective buyers, TL "haters", TL "wannabies", and others. I think it's cool that we can exchange info between TL owners from all over the US and Canada.

There is always going to be some idiot who will post "My Maxima will kick your TL-S's Ass", just to see the reaction. This guy probably drives a Pinto, or his parents car. You cannot take this stuff to heart.

There is no need to "defend" your car, your purchase, your likes or dislikes (i.e. "Bowling Ball"), as the only thing that matters should be what YOU think about YOUR matters. What everyone else thinks is just the fun stuff!

One the other hand, I have a BIG PROBLEM with this &%*$(W forum. IT COSTS ME MONEY!!! Because of the ideas and testimonials relayed in this forum, I have spent THOUSANDS!!!!! (on mods). But you know what, this is the first car I have had in a LONG TIME that I am really fired up about, and actually look forward to driving. I already have 4600 miles on it, and have loved every mile!

So, hey, it's not the Bible or anything, it's just a board. It's fun, it's entertaining, IT'S GREAT!!!!!

A lot of questions could be avoided entirely if people would just READ the manual in the first place. I know it's not the most exciting thing, but a solid 60% of questions I see on the forums could be solved with 2 minutes of reading.

If one uses a bit of common sense they can gleen a lot of useful information from this site. Heck, if you go to the car dealer you have to take everything they tell you with a grain of salt. How many service advisors/writers have given you false info on your ACURA? I have had ACURA's since 1989 and some of these service advisors/writers should seek another line of work. Justt as when you bought your car, caveat emptor, buyer beware; look out for #1 YOU!

Good points. I've seen many post on here with people recommending certain options such as NAVI. They seem certain that the next guy is going to have the same driving habits, same likes and dislikes and same everything. Apparently they believe every TL-S future or current owner comes from the same clone. You have to be intelligent enough to realize these people are giving their experiences and those experiences may or may not apply to you. Even though we may have the same cars on here we are all different people. For instance, I wouldn't fathom debadging my car. I think that's silly. On the contrary, if one of my badges was removed I would spend money to get it put back on. I use that example to show how we all have different likes and dislikes. I think it's important for anyone reading post on here to realize that.

there is this saying which my grandfather taught me that I have to always apply in LIFE: "an ounce of Common Sense is worth more than a pound on Intelligence". which is true though, in my workplace, I've encountered A Lot of "stupid people"
i.e. "what's the difference between a monochrome monitor from a colored one?" and let just say your not having a good day then you get one of "this"............

it is true what they say in South Park (tv series) that: "there are no stupid questions ONLY stupid people".
I do understand Oldguy though, I feel for you but what I'm rambling on is, we need COMMON SENSE! it is quite diminishing in our everyday life.

Thanks for the discussion. Everyone is entitled to a point of view. BTW, just washed and shined up my TLS. God I love that car.

Old Guy,
As a MN "old guy", I have some of the same perspective you have. Although, on balance, I have found most of the opinions and advice in this forum to be pretty good. Before I took delivery of my TL-S, I combed the board for finance rates, color preferences, MPG estimates, first serial number "flaws" and it really helped in my purchase. I got a good (not great) price on my satin silver TL-S, picked up a few "freebies" from the dealer, walked out with a 7.3% rate and did not miss a beat looking for problems other owners have found. Fortunately, my car was whistle clean.
Then I did two of the things I like best: drove my new ride all over the place yesterday. Then, this morning, whipped up a pot of coffee, fired up my computer and settled in to read my favorite forum while my patient wife gets her last few zzzzs. Ah, life is good.

Getting older, but not growing up.
"Growing up" has always been over-rated. The expression "Not older, Better!" comes to mind and you certainly seem to fill that structure. Enjoy the first day of the rest of your life!!!

I enjoy seeing all the different opinions even though I may not always agree with them, that's what makes these forums great.

I've been following these automotive forums and news groups since their inception and learned early on to take a lot of it with a grain of salt. There's always going to be some 13 year old using his parents computer to stir things up and have a laugh, or a bored college kid, or whatever. And no, I'm not putting all kids in the same catagory.

Darla: I enjoy your sense of humor, or I did until I read on another topic that you think size matters. Oh well, I guess that's why as an underdeveloped 60 year old I turn to fast cars to express my manhood.

Jimmy Buffett may have had that line but I was referring to the (now-outdated) Clairoil commercial. I'd guess it may have pre-dated Jimmy by a year or two (but perhaps I'm wrong!).

Feliz;
My apologies, but my remark (whatever it was) may have been mis-interpreted. To quote (I think, Dandy Don Meridith), "It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog!" There's no such thing as an under-developed 60-year old, just an under-respected 60-year old!!!
And yes, fast cars matter a lot!

Hi Oldguy: I see you had a Meteor, I had a 53 Monarch, remember them, almost the same?

There was a 67 year old fellow posting on here a while ago that had a TL-S.

It seems that there's going to be no end to topics if there's still a '53 Merc being discussed! (I always liked the "aircraft pulls" on the dashboard, anyway).
The '57 Merc, the '63 Chevy Impala SS 409, the Classic Harp (oh sorry, that's an Irish beer), there seems to be a never-ending source of material!!!

Darla; are you saying you knew a 53 Monarch was the same as a Mercury? A meteor was a Canadian version of a Ford and the Monarch was our version of a Merc. We had Fords and Mercs as well. Now days everyone thinks a Merc is a Mercedes.

Regrettably, a Merc (in the "old days") only meant a Mercury. Mercedes-Benz wasn't on the radar screen at the time. In fact, the great-granddaughter of Mr. Benz ( Clair Benz-Stoddard) was a "significant other" of a good friend of mine in the "recent" past. My guess is that she was about 100+ at the time (but he was somewhat sight-impaired as well - not a bad deal, come to think of it!). The '60's Mercedes was advertised as comparible to the Caddy, around 6K if I recall my "grown-ups" telling me!

In support of oldguy, the only thing I could say would be the "person" that posted a pic of a 2002 TL & called it the Anthracite color. Not knowing myself what color that was going to be, I said I liked it ALOT. I was just at our Acura dealer here in C/S CO, & saw a Anthracite TL, & it's not even the same as the pic. TOTALLY diff! (didn't like it either ) I'll post the pic in my Yahoo album to show ya! I do agree w/ most that talk about opionions VS truth, it's going to happen. I would post some of the cars I've owned, but I may not have enough room. Early models were fix up types, that's for sure.
'56 Chevy 2dr Coupe (no motor, trans. had to put it together!)
'65 Corvair Raced & modded alot!
'66 Pontiac GTO (WOW did that car go )
'72 Camaro (dropped eng. from '56 into later)
'74 Laguna Swivel bucket/ captain seats!
(All cars above were purchased used!)
'79 Subaru GR (Great gas mil. & I was driving ALOT then)
'82 VW Saraco Nice little car.
'84 Toyota Celica Nice car untill some one bashed the side in!?
'86 Toyota Celica Nothing but a PROBLEM!!!
'88 Toyota Camry Only got 2 get out of '86 Celica
'89 Mazda SX Nice car but some weird things ?
'90 Mitsubishi Eclipse (had to trade in due 2 finacial problems)
Well, more later. I've made this post 2 long.....sorry
